A few days ago we reported that the iPad 3 could go into production in January ready for a release the following month. At the time details were limited, so we thought we would now elaborate a little for you, as well as look at some of the latest 3rd-generation iPad rumors. One thing is for certain; the predictability of the device is a hot topic, one that we hope will see yet another design change – unlike the iPhone 4S.
According to AppleInsider production of the iPad 2 is still holding steady at 14-15 million for the final quarter this year. However, this is expected to fall to 4-5 million in Q1 of 2012, which is the cause of iPad 3 speculation. Worryingly, production numbers are not expected to be as high as Apple’s current tablet, which could be another sign that rivals are now closing the gap a little?
So if there is to be a third-generation iPad in the early part of 2012 what kind of tech can we expect? Well, LA Times believes the next model could finally come with the Retina display, which is in use on the iPhone 4 and 4S. What this would do is double the resolution of the screen, which in turn would make it an even more awesome device for gaming.
PC World has added something very interesting to the topic, and that is the iPad 3 could be thicker than the current model, which gives concerns for the support of the Smart Cover. They have learned in a roundabout way from a source that the thicker design will be able to support Apple’s cover, as the iPad 3 will reportedly still have the rounded corner.
One reason for the extra thickness is to help increase the resolution, so maybe further proof of a Retina display then? Depending who you ask the next iPad will not arrive until March, which would seem more likely.
Apple is going to have to do something very different in 2012/2013 if they want to protect their tablet marketshare, as the vultures are now starting to circle, and believe it or not the one device that could be the catalyst is the Kindle Fire. PCMag has a great point to make, yes we know that the two products aim for different consumers, but as wallets are now much tighter it could force those who were once considering to get the next iPad to choose the Kindle Fire instead.
