You won’t need us to remind you that we now entering into Apple’s realm of iOS euphoria, as the company prepares to unleash their new iOS 5 update for compatible devices via iTunes 10.5. What some of you are getting confused over though, is whether or not the download will be available OTA or not.

You may think, hang on – ‘since when have iOS updates been available OTA?’ You’ll be correct in that thinking, but things are going to change dramatically with the introduction of iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 as they will both support WiFi syncing.

Wifi syncing will allow for future updates via WiFi or over 3G, and as iTunes 10.5 is already out, we’ve been getting a lot of questions and emails asking whether the imminent iOS 5 update will be available via WiFi, without the need for iTunes. Well, we would just like to remind those that are unsure, that you’ll still need to update to iOS 5 the standard way, i.e connecting your iPhone device to your computer via a cable and update that way.

However, once you do have iOS 5 installed on your device, future updates on your iPhone or other iOS device should now start to work OTA which is going to be very handy indeed. Obviously, using a cable every time to update isn’t the most convenient way to update your device, especially when you’re out of town so this new WiFi syncing feature from Apple couldn’t have come soon enough.

Having OTA updates in iOS 5 may also mean that Apple push out bug fixes much more quickly than previously seen as it will make the process a lot quicker and far more easier to reach consumers than having to go the iTunes route every time. So to answer the question one more time – No, iOS 5 will not be available OTA, iTunes 10.5 ONLY. Come on Apple, get the iOS 5 party started already, the suspense is killing us.
