Paying the price, JVC’s GC-PX10 hybrid camera

When I was just a young boy the only brand of camcorder that really mattered was JVC, as they had the best build quality. However, things have changed a lot since then, and there are new boys on the block that competes with this once great brand. However, once in a while the old dog will come out and show its teeth once more, which is just what they have done with the announcement of the GC-PX10 hybrid camera.

There have already been a few early reviews of this new device, and one thing is certain, consumers will be paying the price to have a two-in one device. When you start to study the images of the JVC GC-PX10 (see here) you get the feeling that it is going through some sort of identity crisis. On one hand it looks like a camera, but then that huge lens body makes you think of a video camera.

JVC will say that this is the best of both, as you will not only get great moving shots, but stills as well. Full 1080P HD, 60fps and 8.3-megapixels are all proof that it is a more than capable device, but will it ever catch-on? We have seen camcorders come to market that say that it can also take stills, but consumers are not fooled, and will also want a separate device for each.

This is where the GC-PX10 will fail, as the quality of photos taken are good, but not mind blowing. However, for those who want to take some great family videos and photos, then this could be the answer. Now comes the price, JVC is expected to ship the hybrid camcorder in October, which will cost about $900.

Now, if you were to do some digging you will be able to get a separate video camera and digital camera for around the same price. They will both do a much better job, but then there is the hassle of carrying them around, and also the fear that you have not charged the battery on one. The decision is down to you, would you trade of features and quality in favor of practicality?
