The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been a dream for sometime now, but we are pleased to say that this recession fighter has now started delivery to some of the first airlines to order them. You might wonder how can a plane be able to beat the recent slump in profits for some airline companies, and the simple answer is how much it will save in fuel.
The fuel savings are around 20 percent when compared to a standard passenger aircraft, which is down to many factors. Okay, so they may have to pay for the aircraft, but it will not take as long to get an ROI when compared to a 737, 767 or an Airbus equivalent. Speaking of that company, Boeing is hoping that the Dreamliner will be able to finally catch up to their rivals, which has been leaving them behind in terms of sales.
However, The Economic Times does point out that Airbus will have their equivalent, the A350, coming in 2013 – well if it does not suffer the many delays that the 787 did. Current passenger planes have stuck with the same design for many years now, so it is finally nice to see that all the latest technology will be used for the Dreamliner.
The plane is not all about efficiency, it’s also about comfort and quietness; there is noting worse than being on a flight in a cramped environment and you are sitting right on the wing, where the engine noise can often get too much for some. The engines in the Dreamliner are said to be much quieter than a conventional passenger plane, and the LED lighting will have a more soothing feel.
The aircraft costs $200 million, and looking at the price of flights these days, it will not take long to earn that money back. We just hope that these airlines pass on the fuel-savings to its passengers – but we would not hold our breath. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the most advanced passenger plane in the skies, about time that these craft that we trust with our lives had some of the latest tech available to them.
