Battlefield 3 destruction disappoints: Hands-on

By Posted 23 Sep 2011, 09:49

As you are aware the Product-Reviews team attended this year’s EuroGamer Expo yesterday and got our hands on some of this year’s biggest upcoming titles, one of which was Battlefield 3 and despite being impressed we couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed.

We played the PC and PS3 versions of BF3 and probably racked up approximately 2 hours of hands on time with EA DICE’s Modern Warfare 3 rival – however during our time with the game we never experienced any environments which were destructible, this surprised us as such features have been touted by many as major Battlefield 3 selling points. The top-end PC hardware which we played BF3 on was undoubtedly DX11 compliant, and it is DirectX 11 which is said to give the PC version of Battlefield 3 its destruction – but despite this we never saw explosives blow holes in the side of buildings etc. Could it be that the PC version we played at EuroGamer was not DX11? None of the staff we spoke to could answer this question.

If you check out our previous Battlefield 3 destruction article you will see that BF3′s destruction looks great, however when we shot at trees and buildings there was no major affect – also we didn’t managed to demolish any walls with explosives or RPGs – perhaps the walls we went for were indestructible – your guess is as good as ours (if you attended EuroGamer and managed to blow up a wall let us know in the comments section at the bottom of this page).

With the Battlefield 3 beta kicking off next week and two more days of the expo to go perhaps the level of destruction in Battelfield 3 will become more apparent soon, one thing which is for sure is that the game at the show was pretty good, however if you thought all map features would feature some level of destruction you will be disappointed.

Have you played a pre-release version of Battlefield 3? If so, were you quite unimpressed by its destructive environments?

Chill pill! What you were playing was just the Alpha version of the game. I played it as well and I wasn’t disappointed at all as I knew it was just for testing issues other than “destructibility”.

I have played the operation metro closed alpha that was released a couple of weeks ago and there was lots of destruction; including trees, walls and facades of the large buildings.

I also played Caspian Border on this year’s gamescom and saw big holes being blown in structures.

The Destruction in this game is AT LEAST on par with BF:BC2 and we can probably expect even more from the rest of the game.

“but despite this we never saw explosives blow holes in the side of buildings etc. Could it be that the PC version we played at EuroGamer was not DX11″and apparently you don’t even know anything about computer technology, either.

I urge everyone to take this “hands on” with a grain of salt…

  • Ben616

I was an Alpha tester too and there was lots of destruction. But we were made aware before hand that destruction effects had been dialed down in the pre release.  Operation Metro isn’t the best showcase for destructive environments, as the most ‘destroyable’ areas of the map are the final stages.

But when I was playing trees were falling down and bits of wall were been blown up.

Do you really think BF3 environments will be any less destructible than the ones in Bad Company 2? Come on guys use your brains.

I agree with Jamie, the author of this review. I was at Eurogamer yesterday for about 6 hours!! I played BF3 on all 3 platforms, but mainly on the PS3 as the queues were short for the PS3!! I kept coming back for more!!! I was really impressed with the game graphics, lighting etc, but yeah I did not spot much destruction.
When I shot the grenade launcher/thumper, it would destroy a prak bench but it wouldnt do anything to those white vans!!! So I was quite surprised. Destruction levels in this BF3 Beta seem similar to BC2 full game.
I hope more destruction will be present in full game.

  • Djroonie2000

No i couldnt destroy any buildings either,it suprised me too!  =(

  • Rblaze1988

Just to clarify…DirectX11 is a graphics API and it doesn’t give a game it’s destruction. It may render it in different ways but the physics engine is what gives any game its destruction like the havok or physx engine and or custom built engines. This was probably just an older build with the destruction dialed down a lot to give players a better time playing the game at events because the play times are so short. There will be destruction. DICE would be downright self sabotaging the the game if it wasnt included…

    • Rblaze1988

Also…This game is not a sequel to battlefield bad company 2, it’s a sequel to battlefield 2 therefore, any destruction that is brought into the game is an instant 100% improvement and puts it past call of duty which has all static environments. You have to take this into account and I hope reviewers do because it’s not a sequel to bad company 2 so to compare this game they have to go back and really look at battlefield 2

  • redpolska

Agreed. Just looking at the photo I can see that it is most likely the the Alpha build.

Yeah the devs already said that the near total destruction elements in BFBC2 wouldn’t return in BF3, due to the fact that when a game takes a long time, the field of battle become barren and a blood bath for anyone trying to cross it.  So there will be walls that can be blown up but it won’t be every wall.  They will leave some stuff behind for cover.

well as one person had mentioned, this “hands on” review will be taken w/ grain of salt.
im not trying to be a jerk so if it comes off that i am then i am sorry, but the truth is that this reviewer
is obviously not familiar w/ diectx11 as rblaze had mentioned, so his “consp theory/reasoning” has no merit. so in the end this was a waste of my time as far as the reviewer but was leveled out by what i have read by viewer/guests comments.. so i would recommend going back 2 the drawing board and take some time and thought and maybe doing a review based on facts and not theory/false indications of problems that may exist when in fact it was a know fact that destruction would be toned down for the gaming experience. now what i cant understand is how you missed such details or maybe just overlooked them, arrived late, fell asleep or ignored the TONE DOWN.. because this article is based on the destruction which is pretty much useless considering that if you made yourself aware of the facts before rushing to judgement, this review would be a dead issue/non-existing ..

your TL;DR answer is a waste of my time. troll harder

  • Sam

fkn try hard, you did not play BF3 and it does have mass destruction. You use explosives and high cal. weapons not fkn knifes and pistols you numb tard.

  • Joe

you guys forgot to tag this article as troll. the author of this article is obviously lacks the basic comprehension of what a beta / alpha is. The real question will be if they decided to write a follow up article once the final release hits public. I sure hope they clear the air then…

    • Bffaboy

Yes, I’m sure they’ll patch in the destruction after the game’s out. I’m sure they can rewrite their engine from the ground up in 3 weeks. BC2>BF3 destruction.

If you had been paying attention to the beta’s update feed, you would have noticed that they had removed most of the destructible environment features due to problems with falling through the terrain – they have a fix for it, but simply chose not to implement it for the purposes of the beta.

This guy is an idiot and needs to take some computing classes asap

  • OptimusPrimus

Hugely disappointed by the Battlefield 3 beta. First off, the map was
also featured in the alpha. Second, there seems to be more bugs in the
beta than I saw in the alpha. Third, the RUSH mode is boring, and
    fourth, there’s practially no hardware.

I wanted to see a huge conquest map in the beta. It doesn’t feel like a “beta”, more like a bad demo.

  • Karenzplace01@gmail.com

Well, as someone who has played both the Alpha & now the Beta there is destruction. Yes DICE said they would dial it down a bit but earlier tonight I got my C-4 unlocked with the Expl jacket and blew the biggest holes onto the apartments at the last part of the metro map. Also throughout the subway. There is less in the park mainly due to its more openness however I could make massive craters in the ground as well. Hey just saying! :) hope that helps some of you.

  • Xxpereraxx

Think one for the problems is this game ga been hyped up so much could it ever live up to it the pc version might get close but think the concole will fall far from the hype

  • Aaron Mcgee92

I just played the beta an this was my first time playing bf an I was really sad It was so many bugs an glitches Smh an before anyone says its a beta gears cam out 5 months before the game an played so much better this game comes out in less than a month Smh

  • Neecemike

Bf3 reminded me of modern warfare.I hope game is better

  • Neecemike

I p layed beta for like 5 min and put bf2 back in.didn’t like

  • Geoff_hqllett

Played the beta version for about 5 hours. Really enjoyed bad company but this one felt like 3 steps backwards. I like boa mops better then this piece of crap. Guess I’ll be getting the new MW instead. Maybe it will be good??? But based on the beta I will not spend money

  • killemoff

im a real fan of the game and i think its pretty solid for the most part. However, the thing that gets me the most is the never ending geographic glitches. i understand its only a beta, but at the same time i cant completely say im pleased to play it due to a fear on going prone in the wrong type of grass areas. it happens more than enough to spoil the beta for me and im sure thousands of loyal fans would agree.this is a problem that needs urgent attention and resolve before the game is released.oh… before i forget, the grenades could use some actual cooking time as well.they could defitnitley use more realism.
