Sony Tablet S unleashed: Apple iPad 2 in trouble?

With the UK tablet market finally beginning to become a more even playing field, with Apple’s dominance with their iPad set to fall, now is the perfect time to try and get a hold of the largest share. This is what Sony will be hoping to do with their first attempt at an Android tablet, the Sony Tablet S, which is finally on sale in the UK.

This tablet stands out from the rest just as the company intended, mainly because of its wedge shaped design. It has a large 9.4” display and according to the company its unique shape makes holding the device a lot easier. Cnet agrees that the comfort when holding the Tablet S is there, noting that it is ‘quite light’ but also believe the design it lacks simplicity and elegance when compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the iPad 2.

It features a holographic interface and a tabbed browser as well as being powered by Google’s tablet OS, Android 3.1 Honeycomb. As you would expect with a Sony device, it supports certain PlayStation titles, though judging from the Xperia Play, Cnet think PS games and touchscreens do not mix.

If you’re interested in picking up Sony’s Tablet S, it is available at Currys, who are offering the 32GB version for £479, with a 3G version later to come and also at PC World, who are offering the 16GB Wi-Fi only model for £399. These prices put the tablet in direct contention with the iPad 2 as they are exactly the same. According to Cnet this could prove ‘too pricey for some people’ and found that the only way a company can compete with Apple’s device is to make theirs cheaper, like HP did with their TouchPad recently.

What do you think of Sony’s tablet? Will you be getting it?
