Battlefield 3: Open beta release date update, Medal of Honor buyers mad

By Updated on

Following on from the recent screenshot leak appearing to show the Xbox 360 beta in action, we have some more information on the highly anticipated multiplayer beta for Battlefield 3, especially important for those of you who picked up the Limited Edition version of Medal of Honor.

A collection of rumors on when the beta will be beginning and who will gain access to it first have been plastered all over the internet over the past few days. One rumored release date for the beta is September 27th, although this has yet to be officially confirmed by DICE.

And then there’s the huge issue of who gets access to the beta and when. A recent Tweet by DICE VO Producer, Tomas Danko has solved a partial piece of the puzzle by stating that Medal of Honor gamers will gain access to the open beta first, and then they will be followed by gamers who participated in the recent alpha trial of the game providing they received an email from EA confirming their access into the beta.

We’re guessing that after MoH and alpha testers are out of the way, EA will then open up the Battlefield 3 open beta to the masses and everyone will be able to join in on the fun, but wait – there’s still one major twist that we’re hearing about. Information over at RipTen reveals that the early access that had been promised to Medal of Honor limited edition buyers is only 48 hours in fact, and then after 24 hours, they will then be joined by the alpha testers, making the whole ‘early access’ deal seem rather pointless.

If you spent the extra cash on Medal of Honor, you are definitely entitled to feel a bit hard done by, since your early test will last mere hours before the global zoo hound the servers and demand their time with the beta too. It seems like a bit of a situation for EA to manage, so we’re hoping that everyone gets their chance to try the game out before the game releases on October 25th.

Did you buy the limited edition of Medal of Honor? If so, how do you feel about this situation. As for those of you who took part in the alpha trial – did you receive the email from EA?

  • hmmmm?

Bought Medal of Honor strictly for early access, not entirely happy about the situation. Also, still no invite email from EA.

pretty sure thats only for PC owners of MoH, console owners will be able to access it through their limited edition code they used, and the MoH in-game store ^_^

        • Whoareu

I bought MOH LE and I got my invitation for beta in july…..I no longer own MOH so if I need the game then im gonna be pissed! And just cuz u spent 5$ on a lreorder and u didn’t buy MOH then u shouldn’t be in early beta with MOH buyers cuz we spent 60 for it!

        • CybrSage

That is silly…Just because you felt the need to overpay for beta does not mean others should follow your lead and jump off the cliff as well.

        • hmmmm?

I think he is feeling a little shafted just like everyone else who bought MOH just for early access. The whole thing reeks, EA didn’t think this one through. But in the end, who are we kidding? All of us here will feed the pig and we know it.

        • CybrSage

I am sure he is….but he should have actually read what EA said they would do:

Want to be among the first to get hands-on with Battlefield 3? If you own Medal of Honor Limited Edition you will receive an invitation to the Battlefield 3 beta within 12-months following the release of Medal of Honor.

          BATTLEFIELD 3 BETA DETAILS
Beta offer is contingent on Beta availability within 12 months of Medal of Honor release.
The Limited Edition is available at no extra cost!

There is more, but none of it says exclusive beta – it simply says those who buy the limited edition will get into the Beta.  Many others will be in the Beta as well.

    • where is beta key?

I havent gotten an email yet either.

I didn’t buy MoH just for the BF3 beta, I knew they were going to have an open beta anyway for BF3. One day is plenty advance entry, especially since the servers will more than likely crash or block entry once it’s opened to the general public

Bought moh for the invite. Had a email sent to me saying here are you beta keys. Opened the email and it then went on to say wait for further news in sept. Big disappointment.

Bought MPH limted editon for the bf3 beta and still no email…as for the early access. Feel a little misled. But buyer beware I guess next time we will all know better. To bad Love battlefield but feel screwed and have a feeling that when others get beta key I will be fighting to get mine and by that timeit will ne public..
    Btw pre ordered bf3 aswell

    • Charlesn0808

I pre ordered it too i think if u preordered then we nd moh le users should get it 1st

I got mohle used and got a limited edition code that hasn’t been used! I got an email 5 mins later from ea! :D

  • Jourdanwashere10

I bought moh when it came out and have been looking forward to this all year. But now i find out that everybody is going to be able to play. I wasted 60 dollars just so i could play it 48 hours before them. They should have let us get the beta during the alpha trial. Who cares about a 48 hour head start.

  • hmmmm?

If you dont have your MOH cd you are hosed anyhow. But, you can buy it for $19.99 to play a beta 48 hours early. Nice

  • hmmmm?

Confused… If I can go but MOH tonight and get a beta code, why did I buy the game based on their advertisement that MOH buyers would have exclusive access within a 1-yr period. If you weren’t before, you should be livid now!

  • Avenaal65

I never got any email and I registered the dayMOH came out….wt.??

  • http://twitter.com/Choch415 Adolfo Marquez

I bought the limited edition of MOH but then sold it. I don’t have that piece of paper it came with either. Would I still get access early?

    • ps3- Liamsk1989

i sold medal of honour the day after i got it. what a lot of tosh that game was.

i held on the the beta sheet for dear life. Although i believe that as long as you registered the game(activated the online pass) to your ps3/xbox/ ea account you should have recieved emails about the beta and still be included.

      • Darth Naga

Nope, DICE already confirmed that the beta REQUIRES the MOH game disc to play.

        • Alan Ng

          Hi Darth,

I think that this was actually a mistake on DICE’s part, and the beta won’t need the MoH disc to operate..still waiting for more info on this.

        • Facebook User

If its anything like how MoH Frontlines worked on PS3 (Disk required), or Halo ODST and Reach beta, or Bulletsorm and GoW3 beta… You see that pattern? If its disk required, its to avoid gamesharing (on PS3 anyway).

  • STEJIM

Yeah i bought medal of honor on the xbox but it wasn’t for the reason for battlefield 3 beta.  Medal of honor is actually a really good game.  The campaign is my favourite out of all the cod games, battlefield, homefront and etc.  Mutliplayer was good but could of been better, in fact i haven’t played on it a while ill have a go on it tonight in between bfbc2

Well I was in the PC Alpha test of BF3 and I havnt had an email yet confirming that im in the PC Beta too :(

Glad ive also got MOH Limited edition though. So whatever happens Ill get the Beta before its open to everyone.

    • hmmmm?

You and me both! Battlefield fan to the core but come on EA, throw us a bone for once.

    • Baconbits1992

Snap lol I’ve been in the alpha test and own mod limted edition but nothing for me yet. The mod game is on my ea profile so tht means somat lol

  • Wilza

Getting the Battlefield 3 Beta was the ONLY reason I spent £20 on MoH. How foolish of me… I was in the Alpha too and have yet to receive any such email.

  • atomicbleach

Shoot I remember being in the battlefield badcompany 1 beta. That lasted like 2 months… I bought medal of honor thinking it would be like halo odst where those people with the game would get dibs on the beta. I’m waiting dice.

    • Arjman

The bad company beta was beta than the rest :P

  • Dhalll_siena

I think that is dirty.  I bought MOH just for the open beta on BF3.  Metal of Honor was a crappy game with a painful multiplayer experience.  To hear that I spent almost $60 bucks for the game just to be able to download the beta a day prior to everyone else leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.  I think that was EA’s way of selling a bad game.  I don’t think they really care about those that bought MOH for the beta and I am not expecting to get it anytime soon.  I hope that I will get the expansion pack for pre-ordering the game, but after doing us wrong with the beta I am not holding my breath.

You bought a game just for a beta which would be released a year later? WHY?

    • Majslaughter

If you feel you were duped into buying a bad game so you could get a chance at an open beta. You have no one to blame but yourself. MOH was crap from the beta and never delivered. If you buy a bad game it’s because you didn’t read any reviews. MOH sucked balls and a chance at a beta key is no reason to buy a game that sucks. Shame on you for belly aching like a noob.

      • hmmmm?

Why do you sympathists miss the point?
Let me try to explain another way:
There is new movie that is set to premiere a year from now, all of a sudden the movie makers offer sneak-peak preview if you buy tickets a year in advance. You buy the tickets expecting to be on an “insider” list if you will. That year rolls around and all of sudden you are informed that your early access is a mere 24-48hrs or that may in fact not even get early access. Get it now?”we all know pc’s are more powerful than xbox/ps3, we all know that MOH wasn’t that great”

Yes it was EAs way of selling a horrible game.

Alot of us saw that coming and avoided MoH after the atrocious beta.

I love BF, but I dont trust EA much at all. My continued support of DICE however got me into the alpha and now the beta and they gave me Dead Space 2,  for providing feedback on the alpha.

It goes both ways sometimes–but you gotta be a smart consumer.

i have MOH LE, and as of yet have received no news
whatsoever in regards to my reserved space on the BF3 beta as per the
promotional offer as part of the Limited edition package. Overall the whole
thing is up in the air. i think i am meant to receive a space yet no one has
confirmed whether this really will apply to ALL owners of MOH limited edition
or if it will be on some form of limited access only/first come first served
basis. There has been minimal information (EA/DICE are playing their cards very
close to their chests on this one) but I am hoping the situation will be the
former of the two scenarios that I have listed. furthermore to compound my
worries further it appears that some have already started to receive
confirmation emails (not the codes themselves) which detail to the receiver
that their place has been confirmed as reserve and i unfortunately have received
nothing as of yet. however in regards to this situation i am unsure as to if
the Alpha trial participants are those who have received their emails first and
that us MOH limited edition candidates will receive ours next (which I hope is
the case). i sincerely hope that they don’t miss me out. Fingers crossed ahead
of a nervous wait for that ever so elusive email of notification…

I you’re a battlefield fan, you wouldn’t mind a delay. It’s common for companies to postpone to fix technical and administrative issues. I’m a little disappointed but at least it’s getting a beta! Can’t wait :o

  • BF3HurryUp

Consoles F it up again for us PC players!  Knucklehead console kiddies, your technology is old, and that’s the reason developers have to dumb it down for you.  PC gamers for the win!

    • Diggerdedoo2

no you lose i pay just over £100 for a console you pay thousands of £ for a gameing pc that will be out dated in a week and will have less games released for it so console gamers for the win

      • Tilit

        Your statement makes no sense.

        • Scroll_Master

          Unfortunately, yours makes even less.

      • OlderGamer54

I use both a console and PC to game on.  My kids mostly use the XBOX or PS3, but I use it from time to time.

Well it’s true that if you buy or game on a console that you will, over time, spend less money on the hardware.  However, if you are a PC gamer, you are able to easily upgrade your existing hardware to keep up with the ever-changing technology and you will benefit most by experiencing the game in the high detailed graphics and performance.

Console hardware cannot be upgraded, you must purchase the latest and greatest console.  So that’s another $300-$600 depending on what console you purchase.

PC’s are more flexible and can be configured to take full advantage of games.  Consoles cannot.  I think that is the point the other poster was trying to make.

BF3 for consoles will not be as robust as the PC version.  It’s all a matter of what you prefer to spend your hard-earned money on.

        • Rizambyyy

I would play pc for that reason if I could use a controller.

        • OlderGamer54

I believe you can still buy a USB gaming console controller for PC’s.  I have tried them out in the past and for me, the keyboard and mouse feel more natural.  Check out Logitech’s website to see if they still make them.

        • Durock001

The xbox 360 controller can be used on pc

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EKTMZWPUVVU4CBKH4HWPKPVNCY cal5000

Xbox players pay Xbox live fees, pc players dont. A decent gaming pc can be built for less than $600.

And no it wont be outdated in a week because consoles are 6 years old and we play the same games.

Why would think that even makes any sense? Consoles are a dead weight on the gaming industry after the first year of their release when tech goes flying past them.

        Troll harder

  • Brad_Koerner93

You realize it’s microsoft and Sony holding back the beta right, Dice and EA have nothing to do with it.

    • hmmmm?

Thanks for clarifying. The point is regardless of who/what is holding it back, it sounds like the people who bought moh are going to get hosed out of their “early access”. What does that have to do with consoles/pcs, microsoft/sony? Please read the post again, in this case it has everything to do with EA Dice.

    • Mitolo

Brad_Koerner933 days ago You realize it’s microsoft and Sony holding back the beta right, Dice and EA have nothing to do with it.How is that ?  Since when does any beta have to have Microsoft or Sony give a ok to release some thing ???

  • ipsous

I have MOH LE and I did get an email confirming that I had a reserved slot for Beta. I also got one for Alpha but as I was away I couldn’t try it.

  • Spongeonfire

The Reason why they won’t just keep it on pc is because the company is looking for sales. its a business strategy because most kids have xbox or ps3. Consoles=Profit Pc games tend to be cheaper though console are usually expensive what would you do for ££$$$$

  • Dinkhaven

This is getting annoying hearing some of you complain about how you were tricked but have already played bf3 on the alpha. Suck it up, stop bitching, youre out 60 bucks (your own fault). Some of us haven’t played any of it yet and people who have already tested the alpha are bitching that they wont have it two days ahead of time. Just shut up and wait for it to start.

  • http://twitter.com/preecer20 Spencer Preece

i bought MoH for the game anyway, BF3 Beta is just a bonus:)

  • Jmurray

I bought MOH just for the BF3 beta and it was no shock when i played the MOH online that it was crap! ( great idea horrible follow through) As far as not getting the beta until about a month before BF3 is out shouldnt be a surprise cause video game companies have been collectivley screwing us gamers! why should they stop now!

  • Thataboy85

If EA handles this situation only allowing MOH buyers a mere 48 hours early acess,I will never ever purchase a game from them on the promise of early access to a game that there promoting. I hate to feel like someone told me a lie just to get me to make a purchase!!!! Shame on you EA , thats how you treat your customers!!!!

    • Danieltwaddle

If you bought a game based on the Early Access, that’s just being a bad consumer. Technically, 48 hours is early. They didn’t treat you badly, mislead you, or lie to you. No where did they say “Your getting a week early access.” They just said early access. Don’t blame EA. Blame yourself for making a bad purchase.

    • CybrSage

Interesting thing is that the public betas are usually so short it does not make much sense to pay more to join them.

I was also in the alpha trial (got the invite on my birthday this year!) and didn’t receive a key. I bought the LE version of MoH, installed it, and put the box away thinking the actual KEY was on the little flyer in the box.  Then I pre-ordered BF3 on the first possible day…at a Gamestop (thinking my LE MoH key would suffice), and never got an email.  Today I opened Origin, registered my LE MoH with the launcher…and STILL have no key.  I’m mostly upset at myself for thinking the key was IN the box on my shelf, but I also feel like EA didn’t give enough information about the PC version of MoH granting early access to the beta. I knew the beta was coming, but thought I was prepared.  …Now I think I’ll go play BFBC2 and wait the 2 extra days.

  • Mehhh

I got MOH limited edition new for 20 bucks and I liked the game soooo I don’t really care that much. I’m just disappointed they said early September and here we are almost October.

  • Lt.WaX

I think i can sit this one out aswell.
Gamers should know big titles are almost impossible to get to the consumer all at once.
If you buy a game based upon a beta key for another game thats really your own choice.
I myself bought the moh LE and cost me about  €5,- more.. Now i preordered bf3 and got the same early acces again :P my fault, i will not cry. They only need to comfirm me as super ultra 4 day early acces spot!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matty-Ward/1210875895 Matty Ward

Def feel a little pissed…they made the LE MOE seem exclusive with the beta bonus..for me this was the main reason i bought the title at release. I thought it would be LE owners exclusivley, but failing that at least more than 2 days?!? cmon ea….
