Droid Bionic: Poor battery life with 4G LTE usage – Consumer opinions

By Updated on

If you cast your mind back to the HTC Thunderbolt reviews and general impression from consumers, there was one unfortunate conclusion that everyone agreed on – it had terrible battery life. That was mainly down to 4G LTE data usage, so how does Verizon’s latest 4G handset, the Droid Bionic shape up in terms of battery life consumption?

Not bad at all, but definitely a lot better than the Thunderbolt it seems. The worrying factor which may be putting consumers off from their purchase of a Droid Bionic is conflicting reports about battery life, as we’ve heard both praise and criticism for the Droid Bionic, supposedly dubbed as the best Android handset on the market today.

An recent article over at Cnet praised the battery life on the Droid Bionic, claiming that it offered a good 7 hours and 55 minutes calling time with 4G LTE data switched on. This increased to almost 10 and a half hours on the Droid Bionic when 4G was switched to 3G mode, so this does seem like Motorola have been working hard on trying to eliminate battery life fears during the handset’s well documented period of exile.

However, a few other reports have questioned the battery life on the device, suggesting that the great features on the device may be overshadowed by poor battery life – the same disease which plagued the Thunderbolt. ConsumerReports have touched upon this matter in their first impressions here, while a review over at ThisismyNext actually listed poor battery life as a disadvantage of the device, adding that ”it’s clear that the battery life of this phone succumbs to the drain of LTE service.”

For those of you that have been using a Droid Bionic for a few days, would you agree with the claims that the battery life on the device is a bit disappointing after so much promise? Drainage when using 4G LTE may prove to be one issue which cannot be avoided, but it remains to be seen just how big of a problem it may become for consumers, and also Verizon and Motorola in the long run.

I can make it through a 10-14 hour day with a single charge on my extended battery. My day consists of 1-2 hours of heavy web use on 4g (sometimes wifi) then 2-3 hours of testing and phone calls, 1-2 hours of heavy web use, 2-3 hours of testing and phone calls, 2 hours mp3, the remaining time with general intermittent use of web, testing and phone. I end up with between 5%-40% battery life depending on the day. Phone is on performance mode all the time, with auto brightness for screen and phone is rooted but that doesn’t make a difference yet.

Every phone on the market needs better battery life, I believe I am a fairly heavy user and this gets better than most. It would be great to have a phone that could be used for 2-3 days of heavy use without a charge… but I don’t want a wheelbarrow to carry it with.

It’s a big sign if you go to purchase an extended battery on Verizons website for the Droid Bionic and its sold out already, 2 days after coming out. Battery that comes with it is NO GOOD. I LOVE my phone and will be buying an extended battery now that I see how quickly it can run out. I live in an area where service is in and out, which drains battery life even more than normally.

My bionic battery has been going down real fast. I thought it was a defective battery. i use it no more then my droid x. and in comparison with similar usage my droid would last 8 hours on a normal day. but my bionic will last about 4 hours on a normal day.. I changed batteries to see if i have a actual defective battery or not. If this new battery is the same then I WILL upgrade to the larger battery. It costs 40 or 50 bukcs and i dont mind the *minor* bulk it adds.

Oh yeah. besides Battery. this phone is bad to the bone. I like it a lot.. super a lot. THis phone is the best for me. a iphone may work good for others, but there is no other phone thats as good for me then this one. m

I have used my Droid Bionic for three days. Great phone, but TERRIBLE battery life. I was hopeful after reading the various stories about the battery life being better than expected, but even with minimal usage–and with wi-fi, bluetooth, and satellites turned off–the phone is down to the red in about six hours. Sadly, this phone will probably end up going back to Verizon.

I am not sure what people think they are getting into. I have used this phone since it came out. I have used it to watch movies, surf the web, use my Rhapsody account to stream music and used Google Earth with it. I get reasonable battery life out of it. I bought a second battery believing that I would need an extra battery or extended battery to make it through the day with any 4G phone. I have yet to need my extra battery. I get the feeling that people expect to be able to watch movie after movie all day and have battery left over after hours of heavy usage. I think we are years away from that kind of technology. I think that the vendors will have to get better before we will ever be able to have that kind of battery life.
I absolutely love this phone! I looked for ways not to like it, but I have not been able to find any. I use google docs for work, the calender, ZUMOCAST!!!, Rhapsody, Kindle, Audible, Google Earth all day long. I love it! love it! love it!

this phone is dope, but I was really disappointed when my battery only lasts for 4 hours with medium usage. Im keeping it, on 3g battery life is mint.

my battery life is horrible, I am a moderate user, data on 4g all the time, texting all day, occational phone calls.  I have multiple e-mail address’ that are polling all the time.  I am getting 4-6 hours on a normal charge.  I love the phone, but if it is not able to stay powered on it does me no good.  Any suggestions on how to increase the battery life would be greatly appreciated.
