Verizon Droid Incredible 2.3 Gingerbread update- list of changes

By Posted 8 Sep 2011, 12:27

Yesterday Verizon Wireless began rolling out the update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the HTC Droid Incredible, by now the update should have hit most people’s Incredibles, however if not you can find out how to carry out the software update manually here.

Today we have a complete breakdown of all of the changes which this update brings and there is quite a lot to get through, let’s start by running you through a few of the new enhancements. When using your Incredible after the update you should notice that a new Download Manager App will take care of anything you begin downloading and when editing text you should experience easy copy functionality and word selection. The most exciting enhancement should really improve general performance and battery life, you will be able to see what apps are active and how much storage and memory each is using – the insight you will get from this should ensure that you won’t leave too many apps running at once.

There are lots of fixes and improvements which have been made to the Incredible’s messaging features – we are told that MMS functionality has been fixed so messages send correctly, not only this but if someone sends you an audio file you should easily be able to save and play the clip. One other tweak will allow you to send Vcard via SMS.

Other changes which are worth a mentioning include the fact that post update your Incredible will be able to connect to the internet via Bluetooth (which obviously depends on your setup), we can also confirm that VZ Navigator will operate over WiFi. Three small updates which you may like include the fact that the camera will function without a memory card present, also the City ID app has been fixed (no further details given) and finally when using the Music widget you will be able to change songs by pressing the forward button.

We would love to hear from you if you experienced any problems post update, or if you spotted any other slight improvements – let us know in the comments section below. You can find out more about the update via this PDF.

Hmmmm…now, WI-Fi connectivity to our home network with the phone is broken.  ANy issues with your setup?

Got the update this morning.  After updating, some apps have vanished from the screen – I have openings where icons used to be for some apps.

Other apps, like Netflix, Angry Birds, Unblock Me, OI File Manager, Barcode Scanner, Google Books, IMDB, etc. now show what can only be described as an “Android Market” icon, and do nothing when pushed.

This would have been good information to know when I got pushed the update…

Same here plus now I have the Low on Space message despite not having it before and after ‘losing’ apps!  Had to reinstall AppBrain and tried to restore lost apps – no luck yet.

When I got the update, at first it did not recognize apps that were on my SD card.  I had to remove it and put it back in.  After that, everything worked about 20 seconds later.  Also make sure you have an internet connection, either 3G or wi-fi…  Android market needs to re-sign you in, which it does automatically, but only if it can get online.

Problem is not with getting the apps back on, it is getting back to the data that is associated with them.  My kids and I love Angry Birds, which I *purchased* way back when.  The free one is now the only one I can find, and I have no obvious way to transferring our progress through the game to the newly downloaded version.  The same goes for any other apps that were on the SD card.

Also, if the app that I have/had is no longer on the market, I am sunk.  Again, something that should have been explained to me when the update was pushed upon me.

I also got the “low on space” message after updating.. #annoying

I keep getting the “low on space” warning but it seems I have the majority of space free. Also my yahoo mail app keeps notifying me of new mail messages but they never actually get to me.

  • Sam

“Low On Space” warning appeared on my Incredible and when I click the notification it takes me to my internal phone storage list which says that the majority of my space is free (185mb used / 563mb available).

Since this warning appeared, my phone is no longer syncing and I cannot send or receive email through my usual Gmail app.  Not sure yet what else is affected.  Turning power off and restarting does nothing.

Basically, from my vantage point right now, Gingerbread bricked my phone.  This sucks.

It’s the Facebook app clear data from that app go to manage apps and click on fb app, clear the data

After update many apps did not work. Had to unmount and mount SD card, then all but 1 or 2 apps worked fine. Network connection to home wi-fi broke, but all I had to do was turn off and on wi-fi and phone connected. Had to update login to various sites including Amazon app store. So far it adds up to just a few minor annoyances all with easy fixes.

  • Derek Cowan

I just updated my wife’s DINC and had the same issue others noted about all apps on the SD card not working. I un-mounted and re-mounted the SD card and that resolved the issue very quickly.  She also was prompted to login again to many apps that likely had their credential cached before the OTA update was installed (like Android Market & Amazon Appstore).  No big deal really.

A note regarding the “low on space” issue someone noted earlier in the thread.  This issue is not specific to 2.3.4 update – that has been a problem ever since DINC’s 1st went on sale unfortunately and has to do with the supposedly unknown internal space limitation being reached that you can’t see anywhere in the “SD & Phone Storage” or “Manage Applications” screens.  It’s an HTC issue that you can read about in the  forum on the HTC website if you want workarounds but no total solution from HTC exists.

I am having the same problem with low on storage. It keeps popping up and my gmail isn’t working anymore. This was never a problem before the update.

    • Ann

I have the same low storage signal even though it shows I have lots of space. Gmail hasn’t worked for a couple of weeks and will not even manually sync. There have been several updates, and tonight there is a new one that says it “includes additional improvements to your recent software upgrade for your DROID Incredible by HTC.” It says it is “downloaded and verified” and is “Rebooting now …” , however it has been about an hour and it has not rebooted. It has done this before, so I doubt it will reboot this time either. I really liked the phone before the update.

      • Ann

I just deleted all of my messages and the low space signal has disappeared and my gmail has returned! I hope it stays!

  • Jared

Nice update… Now my phone doesn’t work well.  Some of my apps have disappeared, and when i try to open google talk it turns right back off.  Thanks for testing an update before sending it out to everyone.

same “low on storage” error message here.  Went to a Verizon Wireless store, they had no clue what was going on, didn’t even know about software update going out.  I’ve spent most of the day trying to clear space on my memory and message still appears.  FRUSTRATTED!!!

    • Jeanette

I had Low space errors before the update.  May not be your issue, but I found that clearing data from the Facebook app that came on the phone solved this.  After the update, I had the Low space issue immediately and found that post-update the phone had downloaded/re-installed (whichever) data back to that app.  Once clearing it, no more low space issue.  Apparently the Facebook app (and probably others) constantly updates and stores to the phone causing a false sense of low space.  Hope this helps.

  • Jeanette

Has anyone else had this post-update issue?  When long-pressing the power button, the options changed (change ring profile is no longer there).  Also, There is an option for Power Off or Restart.  I had always charged my phone fully (got a green light), unplugged the phone, powered off, plugged it back in (now with orange light – charging) for about 30 minutes or so and when the green light came back, I unplug and power on.  NOW, since the update, I can’t completely turn the phone off!  I press Power Off and the phone acts as though it is turning off, but just goes to sleep (like a computer going to sleep).  I know this because when I press the power button to turn back on the first screen isn’t the first screen on a real reboot.  Also, there’s no reboot time, everything is already running.  And Finally, when going to About Phone>Battery, the Up Time is longer than the last few minutes since the “power on”.  Meaning, it never turned off.  Needless to say, my battery life is the pits again because of the lack of ability to turn the phone off to charge.

Also noticed, Gmail and SMS seem to Force Close more often.  Gmail notifications are coming through, but do not stay as an icon in the notification bar (meaning I may miss them if I just turn on the phone to see if there’s anything I missed, or if it’s on silent, I may not see it at all).

    • Olin10

      Turn off fast reboot.

      • Jeanette

Will turning off fast reboot be ok?  Does it simply make rebooting faster?  Is it known that it the fast reboot does not completely shut down the phone?

  • droidincowner

In addition to the apps on SD card problem (unmounting didn’t seem to work for me yet) my mail icon (hooked up to hotmail) used to show how many unread messages I had.  Now, I went in, read one and got back out and that number has disappeared instead of dropping by one.

  • grafixguy

Still no notification here. I suppose this will take a while to roll out to everyone. FWIW, I’m in New Jersey

    • Xodanigurl

same with me..im in NJ and still no update notification

  • Olin10

This upgrade sucks, how can we down grade? App gone, battery life is cut by 70 % or more. Nice, we pay to have our data deleted.

  • Cooper

This update made it look pretty cool, such as the icons and pin lock screen, and possibly added some cool storage managing features, buy other than that Pfft.

It slowed down my phone so much to the point that swiping to a new screen lags ridiculously. Takes forever to open messages from widget. Also won’t even open my WiFi options.

It did the same thing that happens to others in deleting apps, such as Music Fast Downloader, which I loved but isn’t available for download anymore.

My battery barely last all night unplugged after being green, and I don’t even use more than five apps. Do not have a Facebook so that’s never an issue.

Also this might not be a big deal but is kind of annoying is the sound it makes when lowering or raising volume that I just can’t figure out how to turn off. Terrible when I’m in a meeting or something.

Besides making it look cool and some storage features, this update blows.

This upgrade completely trashed my phone.
First signs were repeated warnings about low internal memory space, and how i needed to free some up (I took action). Then it started to get slow and baulk on certain mail, twitter or browser functions (thinking it was out of memory space maybe?)
Finally it would not boot up.

1 hour with Tier 2 rep and a factory restart could not fix it.

Incredibly (;-) they wanted ME to buy another phone and recommit for 2 years.
I calmly explained that this was their upgrade that trashed a perfectly working phone, and that if i was to do that it would not be with Verizon.

My free replacement phone will be here tomorrow (upgraded shipping $20)

I posted down below about the Low Space issue screwing up my phone.
I was able to get my phone working again.  I went into various apps through the Settings > Applications menu and cleared their data.  I don’t understand why that helped or was necessary.  And I still think there is a problem with the way the Incredible either sees available memory OR the way it displays it to users (from my perspective now, I am using pretty much the same amount of memory as before and it is working fine)

    • Erik S

can you help me out? My phone still hasnt been able to receive the update and i’m wondering if I should just wait or instead do the OTA manually?

still haven’t got the update for inc when will I get it . in Ohio

Since the update, my phone is totally messed up! Ive cleaned out almost EVERYTHING! And still, two different icons telling me I dont have enough memory for anything! i ve cleaned the cached items, cleaned my sd card. So, I can barely use the phone, and maybe text, depending on my phone. My purchased keyboard is even messed up , ÎÎÎÎCu…… this is exactly the types if things that it keeps doing, typing some other language? Who knows!!?? I hate the update! What to do now?

  • Murray Jimm

My speech to text has stopped with the update. Great technological advance – a good phone gone bad.

  • JF

My speech to text isn’t working.  None of my email accounts will sync up.  And I seem to have this ridiculous error msg that won’t go away!  It says “Phone storage is getting low” even though there’s been plenty of storage space on my phone.  I’ve erased almost everything off my phone and it still won’t go away.  I also can’t send texts with photos anymore as they simply just don’t go out.

    This new update is BS.

  • kp

Same low on space message on my HTC Incredible.  Used to love the phone but since the update, which I should have known would jack it up, I can’t do business.  I don’t have time to deal with the many problems this has caused and will be switching to iPhone in the morning.  Every attempt that Android does to “update” their code causes me to lose sales.  Forget it.

now voice to text is not functioning while I am driving. note gps is disabled so obviously it is tracking my phone movement without my permission. when I stop at red light voice to text magically works. When i say voice to text it is for all functions, text, email, voice search etc.. feels like big brother again

  • scifer

I drive for a living, so the ..voice to text.. while driving glitch is killing me.
It used to work great at detecting my voice, even with the radio on and Windows open. Now it doesn’t work with Windows closed and radio off as long as the car is moving.
This update has made responding to texts from my dispatcher very dangerous and annoying, where it used to be so easy to just answer them by voice, and as I also need to enter new addresses into my navigator all day long I’d really appreciate it if you could fix this glitch.

  • Dakota923

Since the “Low on Storage” error is HTC’s problem not the user’s, seems to me the burden to correct is on HTC. Pressure needs to be put on them to fix . . . and fast.

  • HTCIncredibleUser

had to go to verizon store and do a hard reset after the upgrade.  Would recommend not doing the upgrade or after you get the error message (low storage space) doing the hard reset.  Backup everything before resetting.

  • scifer

Fix this p.o.s update! This is ridiculous!
At least let us know what is being done.
    What about some simple communication?!

  • Macdonald403

I have a HTC Incredible and have not received the android 2.3 gingerbread update as of 10/11/11 8:40PM EST! What do you suggest I do?

I recently called Verizon about the fact that it has been a month and my Incredible is still sitting at 2.2, apparently the update they released last month was for the second version of the Incredible, not the first one, so so says Verizon Technical Support

  • Sean

Since updating my Samsung Fascinate to 2.3, the integrated audio jack in my vehicle mount/charger does not seem to be passing audio signal through(I used to be able to hit speaker mode in the music player and it would connect the audio jack). This is a big pain as I have an aux input on my stereo and I drive quite a bit while using the gps feature, playing music in the background. You can say goodbye to that. Please fix firmware. Anyone aware of any workarounds?

  • w7md

After 1 1/2 years of the recurring Low Memory Space error when there is adequate memory space on emmc and SD card has finally convinced me to never buy another HTC phone.  Samsung here I come.
