EA Battlelog stays free, but is it below par compared to Elite?

By Updated on

As Modern Warfare 3 fans weigh up the pros and cons of Activision’s new Elite service in which gamers are given the option of paying $49 for a year’s worth of premium features, EA has announced that they currently have no plans to charge for their similar Battlelog service for Battlefield 3.

If you are not aware, Battlelog is a social-based statistics service which will offer users the chance to see how well they are performing in-game, and also give users the ability to join any game in progress with other friends who also have a Battlelog account.

While it looks obvious that Battlelog doesn’t have a feature list as detailed as Call of Duty Elite, it is more-importantly a free service, and Battlefield 3 players will be delighted to hear that EA currently has no plans to change this just because Activision has revealed full details of Elite. Here is a recent statement that EA made in a recent interview with Industry Gamers:

“We are providing Battlelog to Battlefield 3 players to deliver the best social, multiplayer FPS experience in the market. We have no plans to charge for this service with Battlefield 3. The Battlefield series has always been about playing with friends, and Battlelog takes that experience to the next level by serving as a unique social network.”

How long will EA take this stance though with Battlelog? It’s clear to see that Activision has developed another winning strategy in which a good chunk of gamers are going to sign-up and pay their $49 fee at the first opportunity and we can see EA wanting a piece of that pie in the future. Obviously, we hope Battlelog remains free but we have a feeling it won’t from a business perspective.

What are your thoughts on the two stats-based services? How impressed are you with Call of Duty Elite – is it a waste of cash or is it money well spent? We look forward to having some hands-on time with Battlelog soon so we can really see how it compares.
