Back in June we gave the iOS 5 beta a hands-on test running Real Racing 2 HD and connected to a HDTV via iPad 2 mirroring, this was in early beta stages but still impressed us, and while we love the Apple TV not everyone shares the same enthusiasm.
When Apple released the second generation Apple TV it was both cheaper and smaller, this redesign led to more sales thanks to a reduced price and a much less complicated setup to your main computer via iTunes. Even though the new Apple TV was better, it still did not get the consumer reaction that Apple was hoping for, more sales of Apple TV are needed to capture millions of living rooms.
So what will Apple do to increase Apple TV sales, and could the iPhone 5 release date be the answer? With iOS 5 releasing on the iPhone 5 and Apple TV within the next month or so, it’s expected that the two devices will be more integrated than ever before and add to this improved Mac integration, we could see consumers buying more Apple products for simplicity.
As we stated above, the iPad 2 mirroring we tested on iOS 5 was impressive and the iPhone 5 hardware should include the same A5 processor, which allows for mirroring. If the iPhone 5 is able to also mirror to HDTV’s via an Apple TV, this could help increase the sales of Apple TV’s.
It’s not a secret that more people own iPhone’s than iPad’s, and if many of the new iPhone buyers liked the idea of a cheaper Apple TV and streaming of video and games to their big screen TV, we could expect to see the Apple TV sales explode in 2011.
The $99 price tag is spot on in our opinion, and gives you a lot for the money so once you have an iPhone 5 it seems to be a no brainer if streaming is made possible as well. There will be many more advantages coming for streaming to a big screen over the next year, which includes Facetime and better app integration after iOS 5 is released.
