We have heard much speculation over the last few months that the next generation of home gaming consoles is almost upon us. Both Microsoft and Sony have said the PS3 and Xbox 720 have plenty of life in them yet and hinted at a ten year life span. Sony has recently said that they would only bring out the PS4 once developers have reached the limits of the current console. Now one of those developers EA doesn’t think there is any need for PS4 or Xbox 720 yet.
In a recent interview Frank Gibeau from EA told CVG.com that the developer would like to see the current models last “a little longer”. He also questioned what both Microsoft and Sony would be able to do compared to the current consoles.
Talking about the developers upcoming Battlefield 3 title Gibeau feels there is still enough to get more out of both the Xbox 360 and PS3. He went on to ask what you would do with a PS4 as displays are already 1080p, and the PS3 is already connected to the internet. He added “You could make it faster, you could have more polys and you could up the graphics a little bit… but at what cost?”
He feels that many consumers are happy with what they have now, and the company is happy to develop games on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It is also thought that the industry is totally different from the times when the PS2 replaced the original PlayStation. Online gaming has also helped to change things completely since then.
Gibeau added that EA likes the way that technology is now consistent and said “we haven’t quite squeezed the last once of hardware horsepower out of these things, as you can see with Battlefield 3”. The Frostbite 2 engine was used as an example which allows for some great things coming to the current generation of consoles.
This will please many gamers who don’t want new hardware just yet, and just want to play great games on the current consoles.
