The iPhone 5 release is getting nearer with the date rumored to be in October, and as that time frame gets closer we are seeing more speculation of the handsets features. Now today we have news that a Sprint iPhone 5 is a possibility with rumors of a dual mode handset.
This not the first time there has been talk of the next iPhone being a universal device, but TechCrunch are reporting that a developer has confirmed the iPhone 5 will support both CDMA and GSM networks. Previously a Verizon executive has let slip the iPhone 5 will have this capability, but now more evidence of the capability has emerged.
The unnamed developer contacted TechCrunch with proof the iPhone 5 will work with both CDMA and GSM networks. The current Verizon iPhone 4 also works on similar technology to the Sprint network as it is CDMA based, but the fact Apple is looking to bring out a handset which supports both GSM and CDMA must mean they want the device to be available for all consumers.
This would give Apple a much larger customer base, which provides the possibility of much bigger revenue’s in the future with sales of Apps. Usage logs were provided that showed that a small number of people have registered for an application, and shows that the device is dual-mode.
The logs also show the app was briefly tested by only a few people on a device running iOS 5, and had two different sets of mobile network codes/country codes. These showed both AT&T and Verizon, and having support for both types of network would turn the device into a world phone.
Users would then have the opportunity to roam between networks easily especially when traveling outside the US. Although this news of a dual-mode iPhone 5 doesn’t guarantee the device coming onto the Sprint network, it makes the possibility of it greater than before. The more networks Apple can get its flagship device onto the greater chance it has in fighting the competition from Android.
Do you think a dual-mode iPhone 5 will result in the handset landing on the Sprint network?
