Earlier today we told you about the next iPhone being a dual mode device that will be universal around the world. Previously we have had reports that Apple would be introducing two handsets next time round. Now we have reports of a cheaper iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 set for a September release.
According to Reuters Apple’s manufacturers in Asia have started making a more affordable iPhone 4 but with an eight gigabyte flash drive. This information has come from two sources and the hardware is being manufactured by a Korean company.
The current iPhone 4 is available in both 16GB and 32GB versions, as well as the white model and Verizon iPhone 4. It is thought a cheaper iPhone 4 would boosts Apple’s customer base in emerging markets, and allow consumers on more of a budget to own an iPhone.
They could market the device at the mid market smartphones found on the Android platform. Alongside the cheaper model is a new model, which is rumored to be similar in style to the iPhone 4. The device which has been called the iPhone 4S is rumored to have a larger touchscreen, and also an improved antenna and an 8-megapixel camera.
Manufacturers of the handset have been told to get ready for production of 45 million units altogether. The company is thought to be looking at emerging markets in Asia such as China as its next big target. Tim Cook of Apple has previously said that the country offers “an incredible opportunity”, and opens up the chance of a huge market for the company.
Whether there is any truth in these rumors won’t be known until next month when Apple has already promised to be bringing a product transition. There will be some who will be happy with a cheaper version of the iPhone, but there will be some who want to see something totally different from the company.
Having an iPhone with smaller storage will be usable with the upcoming iCloud storage feature of iOS 5, and could prove an even bigger money maker for Apple. Would you buy an iPhone 4 with 8GB of storage?
