Nintendo 3DS price update does the trick as sales rocket

Last month Nintendo announced a major price cut to their 3DS console following some disappointing sales since the device was first launched. Now the Nintendo 3DS price update does the trick as sales rocket for the company.

Figures have just been released that show the 3DS has since seen massive increases in the amount of units shifted in Japan last week. According to PCWorld the device saw its biggest seven day run of sales since it was first released in February. Nintendo managed to shift 214,821 units in the country, which only saw the device reduced in price for four of the days from that week.

The week ending Sunday August 14th saw a massive rise in sales compared to previous weeks leading up to the price reduction. The last full week before the price cuts were announced Nintendo only managed to shift 32,381 units in the country.

The price was reduced by up to forty percent depending on country, and lead to a retailer price war beginning. Nintendo slashed the price of the console following lack luster sales, and the fact Sony will be launching its new Vita handheld console by the beginning of next year.

It also hasn’t been helped by the fact many people are now using smartphones for gaming on the go. The device was launched too much fanfare, and the fact that it was 3D without the need to wear glasses was its unique selling point. It got off to a strong start following its release and managed to quickly rack up 371,326 sales of the device.

So far they have shifted about 1.5 million units in Japan, and Nintendo are still predicting to shift 16 million units by March of next year worldwide. Unfortunately the device was quickly criticized by many for its weak lineup of release titles, and had some gamers complaining of headaches. The company has also seen sales of its Wii console tailing off recently, which lead to Nintendo lowering its profit predictions by eighty percent.

Like any product if it offers good value for money it will sell like hot cakes, and now Nintendo may have just got it at a level which will see many consumers picking one up. Time will tell if it is just a small spike in sales figures over the coming months, and the big test will come when we enter the busy holiday season.
