If your first proper experience of an online first-person shooter was playing Counter-Strike 1.6 with your friends, you will have been delighted with the news earlier in the week that Valve are building a brand new Counter-Strike game not only for hardcore PC gamers, but consoles as well.
The game will be called Counter-Strike Global Offensive and it will be releasing within the early part of 2012. Like the original Counter-Strike, Global Offensive seems to be an online-only type of game, like Warhawk on the PS3 to draw similarities, and it will feature the same type of gameplay that saw Counter-Strike win numerous gaming awards, for it’s simple but highly addictive gameplay – evident in the fact that CS 1.6 continues to be one of the most popular online FPS games in the world.

Perhaps more exciting for Counter-Strike fans though, is that Global Offensive will feature updated versions of some of the classic maps featured in CS 1.6. These should include some of the default maps in that game such as de_dust, de_dust2, cs_italy, and de_inferno. You may have seen a ‘debut trailer’ that was doing the rounds this week, but that was actually a fan-made trailer made years ago, so we’re still waiting for some official screens and footage from Valve – hopefully they will release that alongside their Gamescom reveal for the game this week.
On a side note, we want to focus on the impact Counter-Strike Global Offensive could have on the current console and PC war with reference to the first-person shooter community. Considering how many gamers feel about Call of Duty at the moment, i.e due to unrealistic, repetitive arcade gameplay (so the critics say), it will be interesting to see how many gamers will switch to Counter-Strike Global Offensive out of sheer frustration at the current state of online shooters on console and PC.
Valve will have a harder time convincing those who have never played the original Counter-Strike to pick up Global Offensive in favor of Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3, but we have a feeling that this new game is going to be something of a secret weapon and it’s a game which we’re looking forward to playing at the upcoming Eurogamer Expo in next month where it will be playable.
What are your immediate thoughts on the announcement of a brand new Counter-Strike game? Does it have the potential to knock off console juggernauts in MW3 and BF3 from their respective pedestals, or will it turn out to be a flop?
