Back in 2008 the American rapper and producer Dr Dre founded a headphone and loudspeaker company called Beats By Dr. Dre, since then both HP and Chrysler Motors have partnered Beats for high-end audio in their products, now HTC has struck a deal with Dr Dre and purchased a majority stake in the company.
Exact details are not known, however from what we can gather the deal was worth $300 million and for this HTC has gained a 51% stake in the company, apparently HTC plan to improve sound quality in there products and plan to use Beats technology to do just this.
The co-founder of Beats By Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, had this to say on the matter: “The marriage of these two companies is very, very good. We are very good for each other” and added “With HTC’s innovation, technology and leadership, we feel we can really compete with anybody in this area”.
We think it will be a while until HTC smartphones and tablets start arriving with Beats-powered audio, however we can’t wait to see if such devices set a new audio standard for mobile devices, if so, don’t be too surprised if competing smartphone / tablet manufacturers start working closely with rival headphone manufacturers. One thing is for sure HTC’s “quietly brilliant” motto might have to be changed.
As previously mentioned HP and Beats have previously worked together to give laptops and desktops improved audio and we have heard nothing but good things about the sound quality which Beats audio brings to compliant models, personally I have never witnessed Beats audio (I’m ashamed to admit it), but if the beats headphones are anything like my V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones HTC fans will be in for a treat, perhaps as soon as next year! We also wonder if HTC may be thinking about bundling some high-quality earphones with their smartphones to combat the iPod Touch.
In our opinion HTC smartphones have never been really lacking in terms of audio, however that said nothing has blown us away either – therefore we like the forward-thinking which HTC has displayed by purchased a majority stake in Beats By Dr. Dre.
Do you own a pair of beats? Out of 10 what would you score them?
