If you were previously thinking it would be a one sided battle between Apple and Google with respects to upcoming releases for iOS 5 and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, think again. Recent developments are now suggesting that Google has pushed forward the release of Android 4.0 to directly compete with iOS 5.
If you missed our earlier article revealing this information, you can read it back again here. To briefly sum up, Google are now preparing to unleash Ice Cream Sandwich in October, which of course means that it will be available just a few weeks after iOS 5, presuming Apple releases it in September as promised at WWDC 2011 in June.
If both schedules remain in tact, where would your priorities lie? iOS 5 is thought to add around 200 new features compared to iOS 4, with new additions such as iCloud, iMessage, the notifications centre, Newsstand, and the Reminders application. Ice Cream Sandwich on the other hand, is a lot more unknown. Everybody knows it’s coming, but the only features confirmed so far is facial recognition and new APIs. Google has already stated though that they are aiming for Ice Cream Sandwich to be a perfect blend of both Gingerbread and Honeycomb, which is still specific to tablet devices at the moment.
If Ice Cream Sandwich does launch in October, then it would obviously mean that a brand new handset will be launching alongside it. The Google Nexus S was the first handset to launch with Gingerbread, so will the rumored Nexus 4G handset be the first phone with Ice Cream Sandwich to compete directly with the iPhone 5 running iOS 5?
It certainly looks that way, and it will be an interesting battle to see if Android supporters have the last laugh this time around, as the iPhone 4 has been pretty unstoppable in terms of sales ever since it launched. If you are coming towards the end of your contract and are considering both the iPhone 5 and Google’s first Ice Cream Sandwich handset, give us your thoughts on where your preference lies.
