Ever wanted to record video underwater? If so, you probably know that generally this is not a cheap hobby, however Vivitar look to be changing this with a new camcorder which they have unveiled, this is called the Vivitar 690 HD.
At first glance you may think that this is a cheap Flip video camera rip off, however if you keep on reading you will see that it does have one impressive claim to fame, this it is waterproof, so it can record under water. There are plenty of camcorders out there that do this, but the Vivitar 690 HD has a MSRP of $59.99.
According to the press release the 690 HD boasts 720p (1280 x 720) video capture at 25fps, support for SD memory cards of up to 32GB, USB 2.0 connectivity, a 4x digital zoom, a 2-inch TFT display and a lithium battery. It also features TV out, a built-in microphone and speaker and an LED light. In terms of its underwater capabilities we are assured that it will cope with depths of up to 10 feet, which we think is more than acceptable.
Below we have embedded pictures of the front and back of the Vivitar 690 HD camcorder, as you can see it doesn’t look too bad considering its relatively low price tag, obviously it won’t be winning any design awards, but it should do the job nicely, what do you think?
Vivitar claim that the software which comes with this camcorder is “amazing”, it is said to allow easy sharing to social network websites and services, these include Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, Picasa Albums, Photobucket and YouTube, we will have to take their word for this as we have not yet seen the software in action.
You should soon be able to buy the Vivitar 690 HD camcorder from most electronics stores, you can find out more via this link. We are led to believe that 8 color options will be available. We don’t know about you but we would like to see a follow-up device with an optical zoom and HDMI-out, perhaps even 1080p capture, we wonder how much Vivitar would charge for that!
