Late last month we told you about the amount of subscribers who were leaving Sprint in favor of other carriers. Many of these defectors were leaving because of the overwhelming need for the elusive iPhone, which the carrier has so far not managed to snag. This could all be about change after and alleged Sprint employee confirms a Sprint iPhone 5 release.
Now as always such news needs to be taken with the usual pinch of salt, but Beatweek are reporting that one of its readers has sent in some screenshots of a conversation between a customer and a Sprint employee. The conversation in question eventually got around to the customer asking if the carrier would ever be getting the iPhone.
The Sprint rep replied to the question with “Please know that we are planning to launch the phone”, there was no details given for a release time frame or any other information. If there is some truth in this it will be a great relief to the bosses at Sprint, besides the many Sprint subscribers rejoicing at the idea of finally getting their hands on the iPhone.
This news has to be taken with some caution tough as the two companies could have just held some talks, and the rumor mill cranking into life internally at Sprint. Or the Sprint rep could have just been saying anything to keep hold of a subscriber. If it is true the leak will come as some embarrassment to both Apple and Sprint ahead of any official news of the iPhone 5.
Apple’s flagship handset is more likely to start becoming available on many carriers, and there have even been previous rumors of a universal handset this time round. The current Verizon iPhone 4 could work on the Sprint network after some small alterations, so it couldn’t be too hard for Apple to achieve.
A few months ago some Apple job listings appeared that were based close to Sprints headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Besides the benefit the iPhone would bring to Sprint, it will also be good for Apple to further increase its customer base by opening up to more markets. The company has seen a big take up after launching the iPhone 4 on Verizon, which could get even bigger once the iPhone 5 is launched.
