Late last month we told you about rumors that Apple was going to discontinue the white MacBook. Now earlier today the company released a few refreshed products including the new MacBook Air, which has helped the white MacBook to get discontinued for most potential customers.
Neil Hughes over at AppleInsider is reporting that Apple quietly removed its white entry level MacBook from its online store and website. It has now been replaced by the $999 entry level MacBook Air which was released today. The white MacBook was originally introduced as the replacement to the PowerPC based iBook and PowerBook.
Apple has announced the white MacBook would still be available with the model number of MC516, but is only available for education institutions. Those who have already waiting for a unit and non-direct education institution customers will see their orders canceled straight away. Monthly sales of the Core 2 Duo MacBook had slipped to between 80,000 and 100,000 units during the first half of this year, which was under ten percent of Apple’s total Mac shipments.
Apple did not give a time limit for how long the white MacBook would still be available even to educational institutions. As we reported last month stock levels of the device were almost non-existent in retailers such as Amazon.
Apple’s white MacBook was the company’s only $999 for many years, but this all changed back in 2010 when the refreshed MacBook Air was released. This included the entry-level 11.6-inch model which was priced at the same level, and proved to be an instant success amongst consumers.
While priced similarly the MacBook Air has many advantages over the white MacBook. It has the fast NAND flash memory for storage allowing for instant boot ups, and quick app response time. Plus it has an ultra thin and light design making it really easy to transport. It also has the durable aluminum unibody design to help it survive the everyday bump and grind.
But the white MacBook has a bigger 13-inch display compared to the entry level MacBook Air, and has an optical drive, built-in Ethernet port, and more hard drive space. If you still want to purchase a white MacBook, Apple do have it listed in its refurbished section for $849.
