PS3 Vs Xbox 360 Exclusives insight: Sony may have last laugh in 2012

By Updated on

If you are one who usually has a strong opinion on the never-ending exclusives debate with regards to the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles, there will be no doubt that you will have read the recent news about Microsoft arguably having the best first-party titles in the industry.

To refresh you on the news for those who are unaware, Xbox CFO Dennis Durkin spoke in a recent interview, stating that their first-party lineup is ‘superior’ to that compared to Sony and Nintendo’s lineup, we picked out the key information from his interview with Industry Gamers below for you:

“I would ask you to go and look at some of your data, just to compare first party performance over the course of this lifecycle, because I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars and units per title this shift has been superior to our competition’s.”

Naturally, not a lot of people are going to agree with this statement, and the key thing here is that it’s basically a matter of opinion. They haven’t yet, but Sony are probably going to counter this statement with first-party arguments of their own, although having taken a look at some of the Metacritic archives, one may argue that Microsoft has a point on this occasion.

Microsoft Game Studios can boast a higher Metacritic rating than Sony, but only by a +2 rating, as Microsoft is currently on 75, compared to Sony’s 73. Key performing titles for the company which contributed to this Metacritic rating can include Forza, Halo, Mass Effect and Gears of War, while Sony in comparison has the likes of Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III and Killzone flying the flag on Metacritic.

You can see why gamers are favoring Microsoft’s first-party titles at the moment, as based on the list above, the likes of Forza III, Halo 3, Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War 1 & 2 arguably offer more than Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III and Uncharted 2 in terms of replayability.

But the key aspect to also consider is that these are now old titles. They will soon be replaced by a collection of new titles for each respective console and having had a glance of what’s on offer, you can also argue that Sony has the more impressive list of exclusives compared to Microsoft, which may see their fortunes fair a little better in the crucial Metacritic war.

For example, Xbox 360 owners have the likes of Halo 4, Gears of War 3 and Forza 4 to look forward to, but Sony has Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, The Last Guardian, Twisted Metal and the Team ICO collection under their belt and primed for release. You may think that Microsoft has nothing to worry about with these specific titles listed, but when you add the likes of DUST 514 and Starhawk (Warhawk sequel) to it, it becomes a very attractive proposition for PS3 gamers, especially with DUST 514 as we believe that this game will be one of Sony’s surprise packages in 2012, a game which is definitely going to turn heads, what with its MMO following on PC due to its crossover with EVE Online.

As a neutral looking in on the current exclusives battle between Microsoft and Sony, what are your your opinions on this? Do you believe that Microsoft has the edge at the moment and that Sony will start to shift the balance their way in 2012?

The PS3 wins because the exclusives are epic

    • Connorloughnan

Yes but XBOX 360 still has good exclusives.

I have both systems. I prefer the Sony system overall but I think that it is relatively obvious that Microsoft’s XBox 360 has many more titles. That said, I look forward to Sony’s exclusives more than the XBox 360′s.

    • Connorloughnan

No it doesn’t PS3 has more.

“over the course of this lifecycle, because I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars [...] has been superior to our competition’s”

Funny how statistics tell a different story:
Microsoft Lifecycle Average: 71.936 after 125 Titles
Sony Lifecycle Average: 73.8166 after 120 Titles

    How I calculated these:
I created a quick Java script that extracted the relevant scores from a text file generated from Metacritic. It did so by looking for the X360 and PS3 tags respectively, adding the scores together and then calculating an average for each. The metacritic lists that I used were the ones from Microsoft and Microsoft Games, and for Sony: SCEE, SCEA and SCEJ. The script also calculates the total number of titles, which was 125 for Microsoft, and 120 for Sony.

Dude that script couldnt possibly tell the difference from a Microsoft published PC game or even Sony PSP game.

Xbox sucks, I hate xbox for everything they have done to the gaming industry (ruining it) and the scams they have pulled.

Xbox 360 is way overpriced, there is no hardware in there making it work $299.

Before the 360 slim came out, it didn’t even have wifi, What’s up with that? No wifi?

how about No browser, even though this is Micro$oft we are talking about here, hello bing, hello internet explorer? When even the cheap Nintendo Wii has it?

Here’s how to put it, xbox is the only gaming platform not worth supporting. You can’t even do anything but play single player games and watch DVD’s (not even true HD) unless you “first’ “pay” Micro$oft for the “right” to do so. Can’t even go to facebook or youtube without paying $60/year.

If you have owned a 360 since day 1 and have had xbox live, you have already wasted $360. Me I’ll be buying a brand new next gen console on day 1, instead of paying to play.

PC, Wii & PS3 – Free Online Gaming

    PC, Wii & PS3 – Internet Browser

PC, Wii & PS3 – Netflix no additional charge

    PC, Wii & PS3 – Hardware reliability

    360 – Online $60/year, which is $300 for 5 years!

360 – No Browser, Even Wii has a browser

    360 – Netflix must have $60/year subscription

360 – RROD, now RDOD, no need to own, all best exclusives are on PC, free online play for PC. new slims still scratch disks and xbox live is now $60/year.

    PS3>PC>Wii>PSP>DS>iphone games>pushing a hoop around with a stick>360

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000769591011 Nick Anteau

The RDOD is a isolated problem with unlucky models. in addition, the original versions did not have wifi because household wireless was far less common in 2005 when it launched. do your homework. if you want to browse, use a freaking computer, not a game console moron. even a lobotomized blonde could figure that out.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Keith-Paige/510289691 Keith Paige

Even a lobotomized blonde could see that his argument which he stated by the way is that the 360 is not worth 299. By the way It absolutely is not. Yes microsoft has the dollars to get nice FPS exclusives but it constantly lacks on Hardware.

Mass Effect is no more a exclusive title for Xbox anymore. I saw the Halo graphic, Halo graphic is suck, the gameplay is not as good as COD. I don’t know why people like it. they have to see doctor.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000769591011 Nick Anteau

Well Wrong Andy, halo’s graphics are just as good as Cod’s. At least each halo game isn’t the same game over and over again. and by the way, it is spelled “halo’s graphics suck” not “halo graphic is suck.” that sounds like a 3-year old typing. YOU need to see a doctor or learn how to type. get a life.

i am from India and here the PC games are way cheaper than the console games coz they are not imported like the latter. I have a ps3 and PC and my friend has x360…i did not buy 360 coz i wanted to play xclusive games as well and frankly speaking most of the games released for ps3 do not come for PC . For multiplat games PC is the best choice coz they are cheaper ..with so many titles coming out this year i also have to look for my wallet….i am not a online gamer and i prefer good long single player to multiplayer .

  • jacob Needham

quite frankly, it’s stupid that this “War” is even happening, both consoles have certain strong points- but Sony is more generous; besides that, i have heard that the next bungie titles won’t be Xbox exclusive, and most Xbox exclusive’s are also on the PC, another advantage Sony has; are the studios that are exclusive- all of them are so much more innovative than Microsoft’s: Forza- a racing game, Gears- muscle men killing aliens…. Cliffy B’s obviously got a hard on for them…
Sony has LBP- a platform adventure where you can create your levels with ton of ideas
GoW- a greek mythological game thatr sports plenty of healthy violence ;)
and uncharted- a game with possibly the best stories and mechanics ever played
these are just a small amount- mentioning “exclusives” Sony has a partnership with Steam and seamlessly seeks to create a better environment to merge both PC and PS gamer’s together

Therefore… i suggest we leave the greedy, money grabbing people over at Microsoft to their heartless ways.

When comparing exclusives all your doing is opening up flame wars and really comparing hardware not software.  No one is going to agree that there choice of console, unless they own both consoles was the wrong game to buy.  I happen to buy my FPS on the 360 because I like the controller better.  It has nothing to do with who has better graphics or gameplay.  If you the consumer has enjoyed yourself at the end of the day playing video games and if the developer, publishers, and hardware makers have made a profit then we can all be happy video games exist whether they were an exclusive or not.

    • Greyankee

i do agree with you on  that, you have to own both systems ,which i do ,if a person only has an xbox they should keep there mouths closed about the ps3.and likewise about the other….i like the xbox for racing and shooting not because its better only because i like the controller it feels better in my hands the ps3 controller is to small.but on the ps3 i like games like assassins creed sniper/ghost wor. games of that sort because i take my time in the game .,but you do have to have both systems and even then you still cannot say one is better than the other i like the both but in different ways.

      • Connorloughnan

        Well said.

Wait, wait, since when is Mass Effect 2 a 360 exclusive? This article sucks, at least you can give some correct information and not try to discretly say 360 is better, others suck.

Both systems are great, and honestly neither can really triumph the other.

    Hi,

I mean You don’t even notice the great MS Kinect, I mean it has been sold more than move. It has even more titles than move.

So it’s not just titles but also these new innovative stuff MS and Sony has put in their consoles.

If you don’t own both consoles then you shouldn’t give your opinion here(unless it’s open minded)because if you only have one then your going to be biased to your console, I like FIFA and Assassin’s Creed and other action adventure or sports games on PS3, But for XBOX 360 I rather FPS games and such, I don’t really care about racing games because I have a steering wheel so GT5 and FM4 are both equal for me.
I rather XBOX 360 online(obviously)and I think it brings some good games to the table. PS3 has Blu-Ray player and much better software and it’s a better more solid and longer lasting/more reliable console, and it has a few more exclusive to offer. So each have pros and cons and at the end of the day it comes down to which games you play PS3 has more so thats a bonus, but there is XBOX Live which is just amazing, so like I say pros and cons for each my only problem is with XBOX 360 and that is they have something like a 54% fail rate and that scares me at times. This article is crap the consoles are the same thing and do the same job the exact same way, just either one has some strengths where the other one may not.
This is the truth and you all know it, I Love PS3 and XBOX 360.

    • I know best

I have both infact I hate everything about the Xbox other than its now chipped for the exclusives not that it matters because I gave it to my 2 year old its now a DVD player, PS3 offers so much more I don’t care that you can create an avatar because frankly that is just pointless even then they are trying to rob you of money they use credits rather than plain currency to make it harder to calculate how much you are actually spending. Theres nothing on PS3 that I have paid for without knowing how much exactly I have spent and the Live thing is overrated infact I have had worse experience on Live than I have on either PS3, Wii and PC my girlfriends blackberry 3g is more reliable that Live.

PS3 online gameplay is amazing and COD feels a little more challenging, The only problem I have ever had with connection on PS3 is with THQ games and that aint PS3′s fault as THQ are poor on all gaming devices for there online servers.

Another thing I don’t get is the controllers on 360, this is personal preference but most Xbox users try making the argument that they have the better controller well, Its bulky I have fairly big hands and still think its bulky this as effect on reaction times the buttons.

  • Robert Jackson

Yes this is what I was thinking too. You forgot to mention House of the Dead Overkill. That looks great. And when I saw Uncharted 3, that really nailed it. It convinced me that PS3 now has a bigger and better set of exclusives. I have an xbox 360 and I’m going to buy a PS3. I used to think xbox had better games than PS3. I was a big fan of Halo, but the last two Halo games sucked. They lacked excitement and innovation. They are just cheaply milking an old game series for money and taking advantage of customers. They’re gonna lose customers by ripping us off and not doing enough for us. Everything is so damned expensive on xbox live. They want FORTY DOLLARS just for a set of gun skins for gears of war 3!!!!!!!! And that set doesn’t even have the best weapon skins in my opinion. Boy that made me angry. Microsoft just blatantly screwing the customers. All the gears of war games are too much the same. Gow3 was rather unambitious and its price is already down to $35. Yes I think Microsoft has dropped the ball on exclusives lately while PS3 has been adding more and more great games. I definitely have to buy a PS3 now or else I’ll be missing out on too much. I think I hate microsoft now.

    • Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhf

i agree halo is getting boring my xbox broke so i got a ps3 it has not broken in 4 years

  • lol

Just looked through the comments, to be honest I trought I would see Xbox and Ps3 fan boys but to my suprise I did’nt :) Anyway I like the ps3 and xbox to me they do the same thing, yes maybe ps3 has a couple of better exclusives but xbox still has some decent ones. I do always play my ps3, I think just because I had it first and I prefer the ps3 controler. I have never paid for xbox live and i never will, my brother has though and to me the on-line is pretty much the same. Xbox has a couple of things better and so dose the ps3. So forget this so called “War” << Lol. The ps3 and the xbox are on the same par. Lets just see what new innovations and new graphics the NEXT gen consols will bring.

     (digs into fantasy hole)
what if sony and microsoft teamed up and made one awesome console that would really make you abandon your social life? imagine the cell processor with 12 SPUs, Nvidia’s new GTX 680 and some more XDR ram. Add in Xbox’s multi tasking ability, with PS3′s sleek XMB, with Kinect as well. And imagine ULTRA GRAPHICS WITH MAXED OUT ANTI ALIASING WITH NVIDIA’s NEW FXAA ANTI ALIASING TECHNOLOGY AND ADAPTIVE V-SYNC!! Drool..
    (back to reality)
but to be honest, both consoles are awesome. I like how awesome exclusives are in PS3, Xbox 360′s online capability and multi tasking and both share the same progressive graphics that really wow us on and on
