Another week, another batch of free Mortal Kombat DLC to tell you about, as NetherRealm Studios are surely taking the awards at the end of the year for best beat-em-up. This time gamers are being treated to some Mortal Kombat II skins for Kitana and Jade, skins which will be free of charge to download.
Yes, you heard that correctly – free of charge, doesn’t happen in the beat-em-up genre these days does it? Enough about our disappointments with Capcom in regards to Marvel Vs Capcom 3 as you can read the latest on their DLC adventures here.
Back to Mortal Kombat though, as the skins for Kitana and Jade will be hitting the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network on July 19th, and they’ll come in the form of compatibility pack 3 which gamers will be able to download if you plan to purchase the Rain character DLC. He will also be hitting the game on July 19th, so all the content will be available within 24 hours, half of which will be free – can’t ask for more than that.
We’re hoping that the release of compatibility pack 3 will not mean further problems for the online portion of Mortal Kombat like it has done in the past. If you play Mortal Kombat regularly you know that the game has been plagued with game session errors, although recent patches to the game appear to have eliminated this problem which is great.
There really is no other fault in the game that we can see, as NetherRealm Studios has not only done a great job with the story mode for the game but they are also teaching Capcom and Activision a lesson on how to release paid-DLC as well as keep everyone happy with their batches of free skin packs. If they really wanted to, NetherRealm Studios could have charged $20-25 for the 6 free character skins they have released so far and die-hard Mortal Kombat fans would have still bought them. Instead they believe in giving something back to the community and it’s a sign from our point of view that NetherRealm Studios are just like us – gamers at heart, and it also proves that it’s not all about the money unlike some companies which we won’t go into detail on.
What are your thoughts on the latest free skins release for Mortal Kombat? We’ve included the trailer below so you can see how Kitana and Mileena look in their classic MK2 outfits – they look great in our opinion.
On a side note, imagine how popular Activision and Capcom would become if they followed similar trends. Capcom could release Street Fighter II and original costumes for their Marvel characters free of charge, while Activision would change a lot of gamer’s perceptions if they released some minor free DLC along the way, for example a couple of free gun/character skins, or a free rebuilt map from the old Call of Duty games. Obviously this isn’t likely to happen, but it does make you think seeing the great job that NetherRealm Studios are doing with regards to free Mortal Kombat DLC.
