Comic Con 2011 Shocker: Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 – DLC Greed or fair deal

By Posted 16 Jul 2011, 09:16

We have some exciting rumors to share with you now, especially if you are a Marvel Vs Capcom 3 fan. With Comic Con 2011 just around the corner, there is talk of a brand new game on the way, titled ‘Ultimate’ Marvel Vs Capcom 3.

At the start of last week, we wrote a piece suggesting that Capcom really needed to step it up in terms of DLC releases for MvC3 if they wanted to compete with Mortal Kombat, which we believe is the better game right now.

Well, it looks like Capcom has answered that straight away, although this is meant to be a secret to be announced during Comic Con which kicks off from July 21 to July 24th at the San Diego Convention Center in America. Inside information obtained over at TheQuarterBin has revealed that Capcom has plans to release another version of MvC3, an Ultimate edition which apparently adds 12 new characters into the mix and will be available to pick up for a discounted price. This will bring the total player count to 50 and finally bring the DLC characters that gamers have been begging for, although we don’t know who they’ll be yet.

The news definitely isn’t surprising to us, and shouldn’t be for you either since the company has done the same with Street Fighter IV, following up with Super Street Fighter IV and even bringing another version out called Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. While it’s fantastic news that new DLC characters are on the way for the game, many of you will be unhappy that Capcom is once again trying to milk out more money from gamers for new characters, some of which were arguably on the disc already.

You remember the rumors about Frank West and Doctor Octopus don’t you? To refresh your memory, files for both characters were apparently hidden on the current Marvel Vs Capcom 3 disc, leading to suggestions that Capcom were once again up to their old tricks in hiding content on the disc, only to release it as paid-DLC further down the line just like they did with Resident Evil 5.

Marvel Vs Capcom 3 may not be to everyone’s liking, but it’s still a pretty enjoyable game – we just wish Capcom would change their stance on releasing DLC, as their current format is only going to create more bad blood and if there’s something to be learnt in the gaming industry, it’s never get on the bad side of your core fanbase.

If Capcom price this the same as Super Street Fighter IV, it means that Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 will come in at $40. We know that it may come with 12 new characters, but what else will Capcom be adding on the separate disc? If you are a current owner of Marvel Vs Capcom 3, we’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Are you happy to pay another $40 for the new characters, or do you think Capcom are taking things too far this time.

It’s a catch 22 situation both from the gamers perspective and also Capcom’s perspective, so it’s a tough one to call really. We will let you know if this Ultimate Edition is confirmed as soon as we get more details.

DLC characters kinda sucks because it causes issues with certain consoles in tournies not having DLC characters causing brackets to get a little backed up. The more important thing is it makes it difficult to learn how to beat those characters unless you invest in purchasing them. You can learn a bit from fighting friends or randoms online, but you won’t really be able to figure out the little details that can help you in a bad matchup without purchasing them and going to training mode. What beats this? How do I beat that move? What’s his frame dis/advantage on that move?

A disc with a lot of new content on is preferred for me. DLC costumes are great though. DLC Stages and Stage music would be a good venture too. Hell, pack them together as a deal!

Pay cool extras, free characters. That would be the best.

      I agree.

I bought the limited edition release. Damn near $80 for the release plus money for the avatars and the costume pack (only one they’ve released). Now I have to drop another $40 for the rest of my game and downgrade to a “standard” case? NOT COOL!

I agree. I wouldn’t mind paying let’s say $15 for the characters but $40 for an ultimate edition.

If the game were to be released on a disc with 12 new characters, it would be cheaper than the previously released DLC. if every character is $5, that a $60 dollars worth of DLC we are talking about….Just a thought

No way in hell I’m paying another 40 dollars for a new disk.  Capcom is taking it too far this time.  Showing your greed is not the best way to keep your business afloat.

I am seriously hoping this will be like SSFIV AE dlc cause I am not going to spend another 40 dollars if this is going to be the same infinites and same overpowered combos. Capcom seriously needs to tone down with this scam crap because all they want is money.

    i want Roll

They have the nerve to release this game with the same Mega Man Legends characters, but no Mega Man. This better be DLC or they don’t get my money. I would only buy it to continue to play online, which nobody is really playing anyway.

If they include the music from MvC 2 I’ll take it!!!!

I think it’s a pathetic things to do to those of us who pre-ordered/stood in line/ payed 60-80$ (us) for the original. Claiming “earthquake” and “employee health”(really?) only goes so far. There is ABSOLUTELY no benefit/pay-off for a SINGLE person who bought the first MvC3 to follow up with Ultimate.

Every character can be added as DLC.
Backgrounds can be added as DLC.
Game Modes can be added as DLC.
Menu changes can be added by a simple System Update.
Gameplay balancing/moves can be added by a simple System Update.

40$ worth of DLC? Knowing Capcom – yeah, probably. Will they include bonuses for people who already payed the 60$ that helped make Ultimate MvC3 possible? – Probably not.
