OS X Lion release date is 15th if Apple Store overnights happen

By Updated on

It looked likely that the OS X Lion release date was going to be yesterday, and the UK time was rumored to be 1am. These rumors turned out to be untrue, and with all rumors they’re based on whispers from different sources. One thing is for certain, OS X Lion 10.7 will be released this month and sooner than later. It was interesting to hear the comments flowing in yesterday in this article, which saw a few readers report they were downloading OS X Lion and even stated the file size of the upgrade. It’s clear now that this was a windup by a few readers, which caught a few people out.

The amount of different sources pointing to new Apple releases this week is hard to ignore. Rumors are pointing to new products featuring a number of upgrades, with the most notable features being Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt. The new products are reported to be a new MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and white MacBook.

It’s been under 24 hours since the last round of rumors hit the web, and already the latest ramblings are taking blogs by storm. One popular blog, M.I.C Gadget, has stated that their “contacts” are indicating Apple Stores in China, and more specifically the flagship store in Pudong, are having overnights. If you’re not sure what this is, let us explain – this is when Apple has staff work overnight to setup new visuals, and their mobile phones are locked away to prevent leaks. It’s pretty simple now, if these overnight shifts are correct then we’ll be seeing new hardware and OS X Lion within 24 hours. If this doesn’t happen, then it will turn out to be another failed rumor, although this rumor is as solid as it gets.

Adding fuel to the rumor mill is the subject of sealed crates, which are scheduled to be unsealed today. This also ties in with the apparent overnight stay for staff, which could be new hardware or store materials for the products. Apple is known for its secrecy when it comes to new product launches, which helps them stop leaks by staff. M.I.C Gadget also states that only a manager can open a crate, and if any other member of staff does, their job could be terminated.

Apple doesn’t launch new products and software together that often, so this event will attract more Apple fans than normal. The product numbers are said to be MC969LL/A K78 and K21 for the new Macbook Air, MC914LL/A – J59 and J40 for the Mac Mini. You can read about the full model numbers in this article.

I think that since Gold Master was released in early July, Lion should be here now. After July 19, Apple’s really going too far. Did the Apple Stores really have an overnight last night?
