Elder Scrolls V Skyrim: Fans may turn on Bethesda after discount farce

If you are planning to pick up The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on November 11th and let’s face it a lot of you are, then you are probably aware of the $10 discount to be had on the game if you pick up the 5th Anniversary Edition of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

However, exact details on the $10 discount have now been revealed and we have to say that the discount is now rather misleading for those of you who initially thought you only had to buy Oblivion to get the $10 off Skyrim.

We have now learned that gamers will have to not only buy Oblivion, but you’ll also need to purchase the official strategy guide for Skyrim as well as pre-order your copy of Skyrim at the same time, with the total price coming to $115. It doesn’t stop there either, as your Skyrim and strategy guide purchases need to come on the same receipt and users will then have to cut the barcode off from this receipt, as well as the code contained on your copy of Oblivion and then mail all three off to Bethesda.

Only when you have completed this ordeal will you then receive a $10 VISA gift card from Bethesda in return, a few weeks later according to Ripten. It sounds like a painful experience to go through just to get $10 off Skyrim, and a platform which is probably going to be met with severe criticism throughout the gaming community. Why couldn’t Bethesda just do the right thing and give customers a $10 discount off Skyrim directly when they purchase Oblivion, without making users mail-in these extras and create chaos in the process.

Making Elder Scrolls fans pay for the strategy guide as well is a pretty harsh move by Bethesda we feel, as it serves as a direct kick in the teeth to loyal gamers who have already paid for and played Oblivion countless times, and supported it by buying the countless DLC packs i.e Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. Bethesda are effectively forcing experienced fans of the franchise to buy the strategy guide even though a lot of gamers will feel they don’t need it.

Strange tactics indeed Bethesda, one which is definitely mind boggling from a personal point of view. This information is only just starting to trickle out now, so it will be interesting to see how the community react once it gets out to the masses. This move is unlikely to affect sales of Skyrim since most gamers will still be buying it anyway, but Bethesda could have thought of a better way to offer this $10 discount in our opinion.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you disappointed by Bethesda’s tactics here, and will you still be picking up the game this November?

Who cares.  So you don’t get the ten dollars off, hardly a deal breaker.  Bethesda aren’t forcing you into doing anything.  If you don’t want to buy Oblivion of the guide then don’t – you would save more than ten dollars that way.  You’d be foolish to buy those items just for the measly ten bucks off anyway.

I’m a REALLY BIG fan of TES series. And I really don’t care about those 10 dollars… srsly… Stop flaming Bethesda for something as petty as this. Who cares!? I still look forward to Skyrim, and I am still a fan of their work. I would honestly don’t care if the game was more expensive, because it will still be worth it!

Yes I agree I would still buy the game if it was $100 dollars! For a game like this it would be well worth it!

    Nice try Alan

Your argument would be cogent as to the fact that little to no dedicated fans of the Elder Scrolls series would care about how this ‘discount’. They might. But for an intelligent person like yourself, why are you not getting the point?

How will this kick us in the teeth? If your a true fan of the series you would buy the strategy guide anyway. I’m saying this because Skyrim is unique to Oblivion, it’s not a copy. If you were fan you would want to know much about Skyrim,  as-well as tips, guides on how to play certain parts of the game.

This is nothing to be covered. You sir or mam have wasted my time and probably allot of other readers time. What this is to dumb it down for you Alan is AN APPRECIATION. Stop  bemoaning about something  that takes a comparative amount of effort to send off a few bar codes to get a thank-you from Bethesda for continuing to support them.  Your trying to form some sort of caricature. Unless you had credibility in your story which you evidently do not than don’t bother with this flawed and bedridden excuse for a ‘coverage’. Thankyou.

I’ve bought the game 3 times now. Once on Steam, once for 360 and once for PS3. However, $10 off is just something I couldn’t consider, because I want to support the developer full price. Glad my moral compass helped me through this one.

actually he’s making a valid point, just not necessarily stating it in the best way. when you look at how convoluted the system they set up to give you the discount is, you have to wonder who would even want to go through all that just for ten dollars. also, you cant really say its a discount considering you’re buying two other things that you probably dont even need. skyrim may be unique, yes. but imo if youre really into elder scrolls dont you already own a copy of oblivion (i do) and why would you need a guide? (i dont) i prefer to explore open world games as they come. i can see buying a strategy guide for acheives, but still. kinda gay that they make getting this “money” so specifically. but no, i dont think anyone is going to be so butt hurt over this that they decide not to buy what is surely going to be one of the best games coming out this year.

and hey josh. that’s a pretty scathing review of this article you wrote there. maybe try learning to spell better before calling someone out on their writing skills? also your repeated use of obscure vocabulary words (who even says cogent?) falls pretty flat when you dont know how to use them in a grammatically correct sentence. how can an article youre reading on the internet be “bedridden?”

These arent tactics.  Its not a farse or a scam.
“Bethesda are effectively forcing experienced fans of the franchise to buy the strategy guide even though a lot of gamers will feel they don’t need it.”  Umm theres no one forcing anyone to buy anything.  If you dont want the strategy guide, great, then youll save more than $10.  Its set up so that fans who do end up getting the anniversary edition of Oblivion and get the skyrim strategy guide will also get a $10 visa card.  Also Amazon has gone down on the preorder for Skyrim by 9% for 360.  How dare they offer a program that gives you money if you buy the strategy guide as well.  Damn you Bethesda!

Oblivion is one the greatest games you can play on this gen of consoles, if you havent played it go now and grab this deal!! Yes, deal!! Then when you finished playing one of the greatest games ever, go and pick up your copy of the next greatest game ever!!

I dont see a scam, this is just advertising a great game to those unfortunate to have experienced this great game. I hope they come out with a Collectors Edition of Skyrim, and I hope they come out with a colloectors edition hard back strategy guide, I will buy it all!!! Thats how great this game series is. I’ve been waiting since 2006 for Skyrim, and I will eat up all they have to offer no matter the cost, thats how great this game is. Tom Howard, I give my soul to thee!!

Yes, it is a dumb way to give a discount. It amounts to a rebate, since the mechanics to redeem it are identical. And like most rebates, they expect most people not to send them in. Ancient way of making money and stirring up business.

However, I am buying this on day one and can’t wait for the mods to follow. If the game is as good as every single reviewer says, then all is forgiven.

  • Lars41

Well, I have given up on Bethesda and Skyrim anyway, after their decision to attempt to force Steam down my throath. I guess I’ll find something else to play!

  • Sam

I honestly don’t see the problem. If you have at least half a brain cell, you won’t do this discount ‘deal’, and buy Skyrim on 11/11/11, ready to immerse yourself. If anyone is stupid enough to actually do this, in my opinion, they derserve to get scammed.
