Earlier today we reported to you that Apple had changed the way its applications were priced on its App Store. This resulted in some consumers in certain regions pay less for applications, while others had to unfortunately pay more. Apple are very strict in how applications are allowed on to its App Store, they first have be submitted to the company for approval which sometimes can take a few weeks. But Apple’s restrictive App Store policies are sometimes a blessing for Android apps.
This was the case when WhitePages.com decided to release a new application. According to Arnold Zafra of Android –Apps.com it wouldn’t have been the first time the developer had submitted an app to Apple. But they decided to launch the Localicious application on the Android Market first.
The application is a location based social networking and local search all rolled into one app, and will help you find what’s good in your current location. The strict rules that Apple uses for its App Store leads many iPhone owners to jailbreak their devices. Then they can use things such as the Cydia app which for those who don’t know is an open source application installer.
Users can then get content on their iPhones that Apple has refused on to the App Store for whatever reason. The applications are not always risque as they can just be to extend the functionality of features which are already present on the device.
The Android Market is more laid back in what it allows on to its store, which is mainly a good thing. But there are drawbacks though as there have been reports recently of malicious applications being present in the Android Market. There is also the case that developers have to test their applications for a number of different devices, as well as different versions of the operating system.
The developer of the Localicious application said they had decided to go with Android first, as it already has an application that has been awaiting approval for two months. Apple have also been criticized in the past, as when approving applications they don’t always give developers a clear enough period for launching an application.
Apple is highly unlikely to change their policy with approving applications, and for some users will be a good thing. The Android Market will have to change the way it does things if infected applications keep finding their way onto its store.
