Currently there does not seem to be too many rumors surrounding the iPod Touch 5G as yet, well apart from the idea of no home button that is. The reason for this has to be due to the fact that the iPhone 5 or whatever you want to call it has taken all the media coverage due to its assumed release in September. So when a fresh rumor comes to the surface we become very excited. The latest is that the iPod Touch 5G could be a scaled down version of the iPad WiFi+3G in 2011.
For years the iPod Touch has always been described as an iPhone without the ability to make calls, but if the new 2011 model will feature support for 3G connectivity then it could become more like the iPad. Now we cannot help but notice an issue here, as this device is very popular with the kids, which would mean that you would need to sign them up to a contract with the likes of AT&T or Verizon.
Here lies the problem, we have seen how relentless children can be when they use such devices, and would not take them long to reach their data limits, as one would presume that the same tiered data limits apply on said carriers as they do for smartphones?
We cannot say for certain how much truth is in this rumor, as 9 to 5 Mac does seem a little skeptical to say the least, which is due to the track record of the source of the rumor. However, it does not seem that hard to believe really, and would make perfect sense when you factor in iOS 5 and its iTunes in the Cloud.
This could go one of two ways, the iPod Touch 3G could take off so big that sales would increase much more than they have in 2010/2011, as offering a new feature like this would make the Touch far more usable than previous generations. However, we cannot help but come back to that issue of carriers. Not only will kids want to download as much music or videos as they can, they will also want to use video chat programs such as Skype to keep in touch with friends – you know the ones that they only saw an hour a go at school.
Having said that, this could become a new moneymaker for carriers, as they could sell special data plans for the iPod Touch 5G solely aimed at youngsters. Do you think that this rumor has legs, if so do you believe that it is a good feature to add to the iPod Touch 5G?
