In one of our articles yesterday we touched on the subject that the rumored release of the iPad 3 this fall could actually be called the iPad 2 Plus. We have decided to elaborate on this and explain this in a little more detail, but from what we can tell the iPad 2 Plus specs will be marginally different to the current model – a little like the iPhone 5/4S is expected to be when compared to the iPhone 4.
We can fully understand why Apple would want to launch a new iPad so close to a previous launch, as they may want to be more like Android devices, which as we know are relentless in their launches? You only have to look at the Samsung Galaxy S II and their proposed S II+ launch in September.
That device is expected to just get a CPU speed bump, and this might just be the kind of thing that we can expect with the iPad 2 Plus. However, if we are to believe what Apple Insider is telling us, then the upgraded version could also get a new display as well. This would make sense, as the iPad 2 did not get the improved displayed as we had hoped.
FBR Capital Markets Craig Berger expects that the iPad 2 Plus could see its pixel density increased to 250 – 300 ppi, which is certainly an increase from the current 132 pixels per inch. The idea is sound, as some of the gaming apps that are either on or coming to the App Store now demand more in the way of detail, so Apple needs to make certain that their tablet users are able to benefit from it.
The analyst has warned that we should be a little skeptical where this rumor is concerned, and should just take it at face value for now. There has not been much news on the possibility of an iPad 2 Plus yet, so we will just have to keep a close eye on any possible leaks from sources close to Apple component suppliers.
Sales of the iPad 2 have been relentless, so how would Apple be able to manage an upgrade when they are unable to keep up with current demand? Having said that, we do like the idea of a minor upgrade between each major version, as this will help to keep not only the iPad but also the iPhone relevant. Apple has been so used to their computer market with a yearly upgrade, as hardware does not move at a fast enough rate. However, the mobile market is completely different, and in reality would require Apple to upgrade their iPhone and iPad at least two or even three times per year.
