Faulty Beko fridge freezers causing fires, 500,000 affected how to check yours

By Posted 5 Jul 2011, 08:19

We hear of a lot of different product recalls these days, but most are just a precaution to prevent any injuries or damage. But today we have some worrying news for consumers in the UK, as some faulty Beko fridge freezers are causing fires. About 500,000 units are affected and we can help you check to see if yours is affected.

The problem has come to light after a series of fires with twenty in London alone since 2008, and according to an article on Mail online a recent tower block fire was blamed on a fridge freezer made by Beko. The company is the UKs biggest refrigeration brand, and around a half of a million faulty appliances is believed to be in UK homes.

A recent fire in south-east London was originally thought to be started by lightning, but after investigations by the fire brigade the cause was found to be the Beko fridge freezer. Now fire chiefs are asking consumers to check to see if their model is affected, and the models in question were made between January 200 and October 2006.

The fires that the appliances have been the cause of have resulted in fifteen injuries and tragically one death. Steve Turk Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety Regulation said that all fires can be lethal, but ones that involve any type of fridge freezer are far worse as they grow rapidly and large amounts of toxic smoke are produced.

Investigators had to work for a long time to be certain the fires were caused by the Beko appliances, and after establishing the cause worked closely with Beko. The problem starts when water enters the defrost timer switch in the fridge freezer. This can cause an electrical fault that results plastic components and other flammable insulation catching fire.

A spokesman for the company said that it was confirmed in December 2010 that some models may have a fault and overheat. They said they have contacted retailers to try and find customers who own the affected models. Thing is if they knew of the problem over six months ago why wait this long to make it public?

We have managed to source the model numbers that are affected which are; CA 5411 FFS/FFW/FFX, CA 7014 FFX, CA 7015 FFW/FFS/FFX, CDA 539 FS/FW/FX, CDA 543 FS/FW/FX, CDA 645 FW, CDA 647 FS/FW, CDA 648 FS/FW, CDA 653 FS/FW/FX, CDA 659 FS, CDA 751 FS/FX, CDA 752 FS/FW/FX, CS 460 FF/FFS/FFSD, CS 461 FFW/FFS, CSA 4706 FFX, and CSB 4606 FFSD/FFS/FFW. You can also find more information on the company’s website here.

I knew straight away when I I heard it on the radio that it would be a BEKO. Not long after we bought ours in December 2009, two of the fridge shelves broke (under normal use) although the shelves are toughened glass, the cheap plastic sleeves that slot onto the glass to hold the shelves in place are weak and brittle.
We asked Currys and Beko to replace the Fridge Freezer because it was not fit or purpose. But all we got were more cheap plastic sleeves which have also now broken. I would warn anyone from buying a Beko, they are a load of rubbish. I am also reluctant to shop at Currys again because this product was only 4 months old when it broke, and they refused to take it back. Ours will be in the skip as soon as we have replaced it.

For a while we  have thought our fridge freezer was about to take off like a rocket or explode then it seemed to calm down and work ok…Now trying to contact anyone about it is proving quite difficult all our Insurance provider has done is given us a number for Beko and the volume of calls of calls means they simple hang up on you!

how do i check if my beco freezer is safe ref no i8s cda 539 fw/1

    • Claire 321

Check the model and serial number on the silver label located on the left hand wall on the inside of the fridge compartment. I bought mine in 2003 so was quite concerned , fortunatley ours is not one of the recalled models.
Lets hope there are no more incidents while Beko put this right…. very scary!

Its interesting that this type of fault should crop up at the same time i am trying to locate a new fitting for the bulb. The casing at the top of the fridge has turned brown with the heat from the bulb, and has broken all the plastic surrounding this area. This looks like a fire hazard to me also, so much so, i am wary of putting a new fitting back in.

i have an affected fridge freezer – maybe Beko should get a few more advisors as i have been trying the number for 2 hours now and just get a message that they are experiencing high volume of calls (really… wonder why that is??), then the phone cuts off!

  • Lily

Yes I’ve been trying for most of the day to get through to Beko as both my daughter in law and myself have two of the affected models.

What do we do when we all we hear is that there is a high demand of calls, I’ll bet there is, but it doesn’t really help when I know I have an impending inferno in the kitchen.

  • Monty110884

I have one of the models mentioned. I rang beko about 8 weeks ago as I thought my fridge freezer may have developed a fault. Gave my model number & serial number & the adviser never mentioned a recall. So were they actually trying…. Id say no. Guess theyl have to now its been made public. I know this though I don’t want no faulty fridge freezer repaired or not after seeing that on the news. Refund or court for me.

  • Sannancarroll

My model is not on the list but I must say that the strange noises it made for the first few months of use had me worried, It has gone quiet since the scare and thats the truth…… weird

It is scandalous, you can’t call them or look at anything on their website.  I don;t want a fire hazard in my kitchen.

  • Apsc

Followed link to their website, entered details of my appliance etc, no problems very quick and easy, at least they are addressing the problem, many manufacturers brush them under the carpet, hoping it will go away.

We have a Beko Fidge Freezer model CBS4606 purchased in 2005. Should we have it checked for possible fault.

  • Ali_jeffries

Can’t believe that Beko have know about this problem since June 2010 and have not done anything about it.  I bought mine a month ago and Yes it’s one of the dodgy serial numbers.  Found out last night and am going away tomorrow.  So annoying!!

  • Ray 100

Beko product recall line is not answered. At one stage, they suggested an 0845 number so that we could pay more for their incompetence but that number was not answered either.
Their customer service number is constantly engaged.
    What a shambles!

Oh yes it’s VERY difficult to get through to Beko to ask if you’ve got one of these dangerous fridge freezers but I did manage to get through and a gas engineer came out today to modify it, HOWEVER, as my fridge already had a fault (which I’m in the process of trying to get fixed) he said he couldn’t modify it and left my item marked as ‘at risk’. Phoning Beko I was told that he couldn’t modify it because with an existing fault it may stop the product working, hey, I’d rather have the fridge not working than have my family burn to death in a fire.  To cut a long story short I was told by Beko that they ‘will not’ send out a gas engineer to modify my fridge and make it safe until I’ve had it repaired, which at the moment won’t be until Monday at the earliest.  Surely you’d think a company as large as Beko who are in the home appliance business would be more concerned about the safety of their customers and their customers families?????
