We hear of a lot of different product recalls these days, but most are just a precaution to prevent any injuries or damage. But today we have some worrying news for consumers in the UK, as some faulty Beko fridge freezers are causing fires. About 500,000 units are affected and we can help you check to see if yours is affected.
The problem has come to light after a series of fires with twenty in London alone since 2008, and according to an article on Mail online a recent tower block fire was blamed on a fridge freezer made by Beko. The company is the UKs biggest refrigeration brand, and around a half of a million faulty appliances is believed to be in UK homes.
A recent fire in south-east London was originally thought to be started by lightning, but after investigations by the fire brigade the cause was found to be the Beko fridge freezer. Now fire chiefs are asking consumers to check to see if their model is affected, and the models in question were made between January 200 and October 2006.
The fires that the appliances have been the cause of have resulted in fifteen injuries and tragically one death. Steve Turk Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety Regulation said that all fires can be lethal, but ones that involve any type of fridge freezer are far worse as they grow rapidly and large amounts of toxic smoke are produced.
Investigators had to work for a long time to be certain the fires were caused by the Beko appliances, and after establishing the cause worked closely with Beko. The problem starts when water enters the defrost timer switch in the fridge freezer. This can cause an electrical fault that results plastic components and other flammable insulation catching fire.
A spokesman for the company said that it was confirmed in December 2010 that some models may have a fault and overheat. They said they have contacted retailers to try and find customers who own the affected models. Thing is if they knew of the problem over six months ago why wait this long to make it public?
