If you have played the new Mortal Kombat game on either the Xbox 360 or PS3, you’ll know that it is a welcome return to the past titles that many gamers grew up playing back in the 90s.
It’s clear that NetherRealm Studios have spent a great deal of effort with the game, and although we can’t sing its praises enough, the game is far from perfect. While having a thoroughly enjoyable time playing through the story mode campaign as well as the Challenge Tower missions even though they get a bit tedious and repetitive after the first 100, one aspect of the game that we’re really disappointed with is online mode.
After playing the shocking online mode as part of the Mortal Kombat 2 PSN release a few years ago, we were hoping that the online mode featured in the Mortal Kombat reboot wouldn’t be a similar experience, but we’re afraid to say that it is.
Starting from the moment you connect to the servers, the menu interfaces aren’t really too appealing on the eye, but it’s the connectivity issues when trying to fight against an opponent online that is the most frustrating aspect of the game. Out of 10 attempted matches, we have to say that only around three of those 10 matches actually connected without any problems.
The rest of the games, we were just met with session error messages, either on the character select screen or during the Vs screen just before the fight is about to start. We can tell you that there is nothing more frustrating that having these error messages pop up time after time when you just want to fight somebody online, and it’s a problem that NetherRealm Studios seemed to have overlooked when releasing all their recent character DLC packs.
From what we gather, these problems have been occuring frequently after a recent patch update to the game, and if you search around online you’ll can easily find messages from other gamers who have been having the exact same problems. Hopefully NetherRealm Studios are aware of the constant online issues with the game and are working on a solution asap as at the moment, we’d say the online problems are pretty much a game breaker.
It’s a shame too as it’s easily the best Mortal Kombat title in the franchise and as long as they fix up the online problems it could easily be the best fighter of 2011 ahead of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and the upcoming Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition.
If you have been experiencing similar problems with the game as mentioned above, let us know how frequently they are occuring for you. Is it ruining the online portion of the game completely for you, or is it not too bad?
