Conflicting news on how Wii U affects Nintendo Wii sales

By Updated on

There seem to be some conflicting news when it comes to how the Wii U affects sales of the current Nintendo Wii games console. In the last weeks of June there were reports that demand for the Wii in Japan had slowed, not only with the console but with game titles as well. Now this was a little shocking, as the successor will not be released until some time in 2012.

Sales of the Wii were believed to have increased by about 300 units in a week, which do not seem much, but Punch Jump reveled that because Nintendo’s profits have slumped they need all the sales that they can get. We certainly have to worry about these low numbers, but there seems be some confusion when you study the sales.

Punch Jump now reports that just one week later 9,511 Nintendo Wii units were sold, that’s an increase of almost three thousand in one week. We cannot say for certain why this was, but maybe it could have something to do with store incentives, new titles or just people had managed to save enough to buy one?

This is certainly a long way off how many Nintendo used to sell of their Wii console. They had sold 20.1 million in one year, which then dropped to 15.1 million the following year. If these sales numbers keep going the way they are, then we have to wonder if Nintendo will have the funds to carry on with the release of the Wii U, or they might be forced to bring it forward?

There could be a ray of light for the time being though, as Wii Motion Play is now out and also comes with a red Wiimote with Motion Plus. There are 12 games in this new version, and should help to get the family involved once more. Now we cannot say for certain if this game will help to increase sales or not, it all depends on a number of factors.

These are as follows: positive reviews, price, playability, and if consumers have not already made the transition to Kinect or Move.

We still cannot say for certain how popular the Wii U will be, because from what we can see its biggest issue will be its price. There have been suggestions that this could be over $600. However, just remember that this console will be bursting with the latest hardware and will be more powerful than the Xbox 360 or the Sony PS3, or so we thought. Maybe things will sort themselves out with Nintendo, and that sales will pick up soon, but we have to remember that we are still trying to get out of a recession.
