With July fast approaching we now expect Verizon’s imminent release of Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II), which is to be called Function on Big Red. We still do not have a definite release date, but we know that it will be very soon, U.S. carriers knows that they are missing out with this Android handset for two reason, it is one of the best Android handsets on the market, and it has started to sell more units than the iPhone 4 in the UK.
The Galaxy S2 will have a number of handsets that it will need to compete with in the US, as it is a much tougher market than the UK. We are still uncertain as to why Samsung has delayed the launch of the S II in North America – maybe it is a carrier thing. This is a good reason, as there will be more than one version, as there was with the original Galaxy S handset. However, an article over on OSM points out that all we know so far is based on rumors, it’s as if Samsung are getting more like Apple than we know – not for the first time.
So far we know that there will be three variants, the Function on Verizon, Attain on AT&T and Within on Sprint. There are no details on a T-Mobile version – maybe they are waiting to see what the outcome is with the proposed AT&T deal? Having said that, they will still operate as two separate entities, so we should expect to hear news of a release soon.
If we were to look at our history then we can expect Verizon first, then AT&T and then a Sprint version being the last to release the Galaxy S II. Most rumors seem to suggest a July release, and so do we. We cannot see these carriers waiting any longer, as they already know that sales of this handset will boost their earnings.
Big Red is in need of this sales boost, as they hoped that sales of the iPhone 4 would be better than what they have been. However, how could they expect any different when selling a handset that was 7 months old?
One company who will not want to see Samsung launch the new Galaxy handset soon is HTC, as they are still struggling to keep up with the South Korean phone maker. Samsung is all set to become the biggest phone maker in the world, pushing off Nokia in the process. However, we have to wonder what will happen once Apple does get their act together and finally launch the iPhone 5?
Update: We have just been informed that the Galaxy S II is now available in Puerto Rico (US territory) on
Verizon’s “Claro” network. We were also told that it has not been called “Function”. the Claro network.
