Verizon’s imminent release of Samsung Galaxy S2 Function

By Updated on

With July fast approaching we now expect Verizon’s imminent release of Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II), which is to be called Function on Big Red. We still do not have a definite release date, but we know that it will be very soon, U.S. carriers knows that they are missing out with this Android handset for two reason, it is one of the best Android handsets on the market, and it has started to sell more units than the iPhone 4 in the UK.

The Galaxy S2 will have a number of handsets that it will need to compete with in the US, as it is a much tougher market than the UK. We are still uncertain as to why Samsung has delayed the launch of the S II in North America – maybe it is a carrier thing. This is a good reason, as there will be more than one version, as there was with the original Galaxy S handset. However, an article over on OSM points out that all we know so far is based on rumors, it’s as if Samsung are getting more like Apple than we know – not for the first time.

So far we know that there will be three variants, the Function on Verizon, Attain on AT&T and Within on Sprint. There are no details on a T-Mobile version – maybe they are waiting to see what the outcome is with the proposed AT&T deal? Having said that, they will still operate as two separate entities, so we should expect to hear news of a release soon.

If we were to look at our history then we can expect Verizon first, then AT&T and then a Sprint version being the last to release the Galaxy S II. Most rumors seem to suggest a July release, and so do we. We cannot see these carriers waiting any longer, as they already know that sales of this handset will boost their earnings.

Big Red is in need of this sales boost, as they hoped that sales of the iPhone 4 would be better than what they have been. However, how could they expect any different when selling a handset that was 7 months old?

One company who will not want to see Samsung launch the new Galaxy handset soon is HTC, as they are still struggling to keep up with the South Korean phone maker. Samsung is all set to become the biggest phone maker in the world, pushing off Nokia in the process. However, we have to wonder what will happen once Apple does get their act together and finally launch the iPhone 5?

Update: We have just been informed that the Galaxy S II is now available in Puerto Rico (US territory) on Verizon’s “Claro” network. We were also told that it has not been called “Function”. the Claro network.

Being an avid Mac user – I would have liked to have bought an iPhone and iPad – but would never do so until Adobe’s Flash become part of these Apple devices – and a replaceable battery would be nice too.

Can you imagine if Steve Jobs were to make the same moronic and autocratic decision to banish Flash or any Adobe product from the Mac OS? The only winner would have been Microsoft, as the rest of us would cling on to our aging Macs that still supported it until it would be time to switch back to PC (which I shutter to think!).

But until Steve Jobs get a clue, I too am waiting for the Samsung Galaxy SII – or anything that fast with an AMOLED screen and physical keyboard (and notification LED light :)

AFAIK, there is no CDMA version of this phone that’s been approved by FCC, so Verizon wouldn’t be the first one carrying it.  Also, Claro is not Verizon in PR – it’s America Movil, which is GSM.

Verizon function, in your dreams. You can “Attain” this Samsung crap, but in will not “function” within the next six months. Samsung always have and continue to have nonfunctional attainable devices.
