The Summer Solstice is now here. A solstice, for those of you that don’t know, is the astronomical event that takes place twice a year. Once on the day where the sun is at its highest position of the year and once when it is at its lowest position, hence longest and shortest days of the year.
In some cultures when the event takes place it marks the start of a new season, which explains why Google are using Takashi Murakami’s The First Day of Summer drawing as today’s Google Doodle. For other cultures the event takes place mid-season marking the halfway point of the annual cycle.
