As Apple prepare to integrate a social website to its new operating systems it looks like Twitter versus Facebook in the iPhone iOS 5 release.
When Apple was at the WWDC introducing the iOS 5 last week the big news was the integration with Twitter. In an article by Molly McHugh over on Digital Trends, the question asked was why did Apple choose Twitter over Facebook for iOS 5? With all preinstalled iOS applications the feature to share with Twitter options is good news to many, but why not Facebook?
Twitter is a wide social network that has about one billion tweets per week and generally about 200 million users, yet Facebook and its social media has more users and has a large amount of features. Twitter may seem more prestigious to some but this could be a case of Apple just not being ready at this moment. Apple and Facebook might actually be working on this right now finding the ideal way.
Facebook is a more complex platform than Twitter with more functions available to the user and integrating Facebook could take more time. At the moment, it seems that Twitter are coming out the best as Facebook and Apple may suffer. Facebook and Apple have had trouble in the past as Apple’s Ping the music-minded social platform tried integrating with Facebook once but this did not play out and Facebook Connect closed down its collaboration with Ping.
Microsoft and Facebook’s relationship could also be a factor as Apple are often classed as their main computing competitor. With rumors Facebook will collaborate with HTC on a smartphone there is an ambition for Facebook to be more than just a social media website. This could make problems for Apple as they could be settling for Twitter when Facebook would have a bigger following.
With this sort of competition, do you think this may make way for just one social network to eventually become the main website? For more details, head over to Digital Trends.
