Apple confirm iPad 2 recall for duplicate MEID codes

By Updated on

Two days ago we heard whispers of an Apple iPad 2 recall, which led to speculation for reasons why. In our earlier post on June 10 we heard that issues were being posted in online forums, especially on the official Apple Discussions forum.

Some iPad 2 buyers were not happy with the delay for their Verizon model, and this was not helped by certain people being told the iPad was arriving soon, only to be followed up with another 3 week wait.

Today we can confirm that Apple has officially mentioned that there is an iPad 2 recall, although its not on the scale that some thought. This site reports that the problem only affects a tiny number of 3G models that run of Verizon Wireless, although the exact number has not been disclosed.

What we do know is the issue was due to MEID codes being duplicated onto certain iPad 2 units. These codes are meant to be unique when they’re flashed onto the units, which would then lead to problems when both devices try and connect to Verizon’s network. We’ll update you if the recall is expanded, or if we get an official number. If you own an iPad 2, how has it been preforming?

After having trouble with my iPad2 Verizon data plan (and reading your article), I found out that my MEID number had been duplicated. Apple gave me a new iPad2 today. What a hassle, though.
