Nintendo Wii U: Release date in 2012, official specs of super console

Nintendo has just announced at E3, that the Wii successor will now be known as the Nintendo Wii U. We have the important first specs for you now, letting you see what the device can do, and also details on when it will be available.

As previously speculated, the controller for the Wii U will feature a large touchscreen in the center, combined with a camera located at the top. The controller resembles a tablet device but features two analogue sticks, a d-pad with standard Nintendo buttons, a microphone and the start, select and home buttons that you usually see on a Wiimote controller.

The display screen built into the controller will be a 6.2-inch touchscreen enabled display, which has full support for multitouch features and also motion control like the WiiMotes. The device will also have support for an included accelerometer and gyroscope as well – basically it can do everything. Oh, we forgot to mention that it can also bring up a web browser and make video calls too, we’ll be bringing full details on this aspect when we get it.

So when is the thing out you ask? At somepoint in 2012 according to Nintendo, obviously no specific release date yet, but no timeframe either which is the only downside from the unveil.

We’ll be bringing you full analysis on the Nintendo Wii U very shortly. For now, give us your immediate reaction to the console? Can it take on the Xbox 360 and PS3?

Damm This Sucks.. Each controller will cost like a portable system? And this size.. I doubt Nintendo can fit a good hardware on this small case.

Small case? have you seen the tablets recently? They have dual-core processors inside 10′ tablets that are a half inch thin. And you could probably fit a decent PC GPU in the case.

Why all the negatives. I don’t think Nintendo will price themselves out of the lucrative family market.  It is HD at last. Can’t wait!!

I don’t like how clunky it is, I think it’s great for nintendo fans, but I don’t think its for me.

What’s the point in such a big touchscreen? You play it on a TV, right?

You’ve clearly not seen any of the demo’s or heard of any of the uses.

well ofcours they’ve made it like that, then tell me why did they make it with a big screen well so you can play even if anyone else would want to watch TV!!!!   :D

Glad to see Nintendo finally has a system to compete with the PS3 and 360, but not entirely sold on the Tablet Controller.  I hope they design another smaller controller for hardcore games too.. one with triggers perhaps.  I have a 3DS and touch play works well in some games.  I will definitely get this system for the novelty.

You can use the Wii controllers with it.

Finally Nintendo pays attention to the true gamers and boosted the hardware up to par. Can’t wait to see next gen versions of classic titles like Mario, Zelda, Starfox, F-zero, Zelda made to appease the original gamers of the era when those games were first introduced, not todays little kids and casual/social adult gamers that have no background in gaming. The controller is absolutely ridiculous though, nintendo needs to take after the xbox 360 controller, or just bring back the gamecube controller, nintendo had it right the first time before trying to demographic. Listen to your hardcore fans!

Welcome to 2005. That controller seems pretty gimmicky, it’s Nintendo so it will sell initially well, I just can’t see third party developers getting on board. I don’t think they have even said if it will play DVD’s, much less Bluray. I just get a flash of looking at it ten years from now and thinking how it was a bad idea. No attached HDD, either, that is pretty much saying that their DLC market is not there.

Ubisoft and EA have started developing for it, and it has been confirmed to support Bluray (1080p).

i hope nintendo allows more than one control because it would make many people want thier system because think of all the possibilities u can come up with i mean they need to start trying here ever since they took rare out it was bad enough they didnt make the awsome games they made back then but now this i mean give me a break we need more features dont just go with one option but many such as lets say super smash bros strife were to come out and were all stuck with having to use a 3ds to play with another freind when we can have another seperate contrl to play with what if they dont have a 3ds that would ruin alot of nintendos buisness because lets face it how many people would buy a 3ds just to play multiplayer due to the fact that its a heck of alot more expensive than a wii u controller and lets face it not everyone has wifi here so how are we suppossed to enjoy multiplayer when were left with so little options here?we need rare back with a new banjo kazooie a new mario 64(not a remake) a new conker because we all know how many of us liked that game and games like 007 need to have a better soundtrack i mean its not all about graphics but gameplay as well games these days are too easy too short and too well they need variety make games as interesting as those three n64 games and u my freind nintendo will make alot of money because us the fans and buyers need to be heard!

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that you wrote that monster of a post without breathing and ending sentences, or if you actually aren’t making sense… why would you have to buy a 3DS in order to play a multiplayer game with the WiiU? Of course you can buy another controller, just like every other non-portable gaming system…
As to your other requests, like retro remakes and more difficult games and everything… if you want Nintendo to listen to what you want, you need to stop writing your comments like a stream of consciousness. Especially since yours looks like you just downed a dozen Ritalin and five cups of coffee. Nobody wants to read that.

i think people are missing the concept of what the tablet controller does it seems to be invented to enhance the gameplay even more i like the idea of as a targeting device or for catching and also the use of it for golf with the original wii remote

but as normal it has to be tested first for any proper criticism
