Yesterday marked the start of the WWDC 2011 as Steve Jobs took to the stage and kicked it off at the keynote. In that keynote which was watched by many people through live blogs, Apple revealed their new products and intentions including iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion.
With the announcement of the anticipated iOS 5 came one of the main revelations which was not expected, and that was iMessage. In fact the new feature was so unexpected that even Apple’s carriers for their devices were unaware of it according to an article at Apple Insider.
Concern has already been aroused on the impact it could have on RIM’s BBM. The reason that the carriers would be so concerned is because iMessage is a socializing implication that is integrated into the new and improved Game Center. It acts as a messaging service where iPhone and iPad users can chat to one another for free.
It also allows sharing of pictures and other content. This of course will be quite a concern for those carriers that use SMS plans to attract customers as the new feature makes those plans obsolete. iMessage will also have an impact on other messaging apps such as Whatsapp.
