Throughout the last few weeks we have heard plenty of information regarding the Nintendo 3DS firmware update which is scheduled to arrive this month, however lots of this has been hearsay and not official information from Nintendo, today we can confirm exactly what new changes the software update will bring and when it will arrive.

A full Nintendo press release can be read over at Engadget, lots of the changes are what we suggested back in April, however there are a few surprises which may interest some of you.

Let’s start by confirming when it will arrive and how to get it, the update will be launched in North America on the evening of June 6th (Pacific time), you will be able to receive the update when connected to a wireless network by simply going to system settings (via the home menu) and then selecting other settings and “System Update”

Upon installation you will have access to the Nintendo eShop, this is where you will to buy games, download demos and watch trailers etc, new content will be added to the eShop on Thursdays and to get you used to using the eShop Nintendo will be offering a re-mastered 3D version of Excitebike from the online store for free from July 7.

Another neat new addition will be a free new Internet browser, this will be able to show 3D images (on compliant pages) and you will be able to use the browser during gameplay via the home button.

Pokémon fans will be able to download the Pokédex 3D application, this allows people to start collecting data for over 150 Pokémon from the Black Version and White Version games. You will be able to see 360 degree views of the Pokémon and there will be sounds and animations. The Pokédex app is a lot more detailed than this and the functionality is a must for any major Pokémon fan.

If you owned a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL in the past you will be glad to hear that the system update will allow people to transfer most of their downloaded DSiWare games to their new 3DS systems.

As you can see the update brings plenty of welcome changes to the 3DS, we presume that there are lots of unmentioned less important bug fixes etc which have been made to make the 3DS easier to use, more secure and on the whole better than it is without the update.

Which change are you most excited about?
