Motorola Droid Bionic Vs X2: Specs Comparison and Verizon 4G Ultimatum

By Posted 17 May 2011, 07:18

As most of you are aware, consumers are still waiting patiently for any news regarding the official release date for the highly anticipated Motorola Droid Bionic handset on Verizon. Unfortunately we still dont have any info on that yet, but we recently learned some very relevant information regarding the unreleased Motorola Droid X2 handset also on Verizon.

We previously told you that the Droid X2 would be available to buy on May 26th, and we now know what sort of specs the handset will possess, and we’re pleasantly surprised with what Motorola are offering. For a quick refresh, the X2 will pack a 1Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a 4.3-inch qHD display screen, an 8MP rear camera, 720p HD recording, 1080p HDMI out support and it will also run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

There were initial fears that the X2 would just turn out to be a ‘mid-level’ handset on Verizon, but as you can see the hardware specs are pretty impressive and it now becomes a handset that you should seriously consider picking up on Verizon.

But what about the Droid Bionic? We imagine this will be out a few weeks after the X2, and the specs are very similar but with a few notable differences. For example, you’ll still get a Tegra 2 processor, a 4.3-inch qHD display and Android Gingerbread, but the big differences are that the Droid Bionic comes with Verizon 4G LTE support as well as a front-facing camera. These two specs are missing from the X2, leaving you with a difficult choice on which handset to pick up this Summer.

Will you pick up the Droid Bionic purely because of 4G data support, or will you pick up the Droid X2 which will likely be cheaper as you’re not too bothered about 4G? It’s a very important decision to make, as X2 owners may feel regret if they pick this up on May 26th, then the Droid Bionic releases a few weeks later with better features.

Let us know your thoughts on the two handsets. Droid Bionic or Droid X2?

    why would I want 4g?

    • DTytse

Kinda like asking why you'd rather have the x2 and not just stick with original x.

Congratulations on posting the dumbest question on the Internet.

      idiot

4G LTE all the way. I was thinking about getting the Charge but totally set on the Bionic. I currently have the original Moto Droid and in desperate need of a full upgrade. LTE is the only way to go so i could get rid of my internet bill at my house and start using the phone for more then a phone.

The X2 is not worth getting excited over not much more then the X which is a great phone. 4G is a big deal and it does work believe it or not. You can buy a used X for under $200 why spend the money on old news.

For those of us who live in small low population areas and aren't likely to be getting 4g till mid to late 2012 4g seems like a waste of money. I've wanted the bionic since I first saw it but the x2 is appealing to me now as its just as goof but no 4g

  • Mike B

I still want the Bionic. The 4G is nice but not as important to me as the dual cameras. I use Skype and while I would not wait just for 4G I will wait for the dual cameras. I almost went for the Samsung Charge but my history with Samsung phones is not good.

    • John C.

You probably wont want the Bionic if you are goin to vide chat, the resolution is only .3 MP.

  • jess

to me its just the fact of haveing a dual core screw the 4g

  • spcelangel@yahoo.com

Will the Bionic also have the 4G LTE hotspot?

Will the bionic also have a 4G LTE hotspot?

  • Curious George

@Mike B: as far as I know, there is no video skype on any of the phones now… since Microsoft bought it and probably prohibited Thunderbolt from using it!

  • joe

I agree with you curious george. I dont think I would count on being able to use skype on any of these phones too soon. They will probably have to provide an update to use the dual cameras and since its microsoft who know what will happen. I have a Motorola xoom and a Motorola Droidx and I love them both and plan on keeping my droidx until they come out with another phone like the x with 4g and the dual cameras. I also have my x rooted and have the wifi tethering on it without a monthly fee!! (which I love and if I get the 4g LTE on a new phone I would definitely consider canceling my internet service and home using this since theres no cap on the download. I would encourage anyone wanting to use the wifi tether, root your phone using the SuperOneClick and then download wifi tether. (just google it) Its amazing and for some of you out in the country would be a perfect solution for internet.

My answer to the question is that I wouldnt get either phone because its not that much different than the droid x and they will be coming out with a new one at the end of this year which will put these 2 phones to shame.

    • Pat C

Does the wifi tethering work on a desktop with a router? We live in a remote area and do have wireless, but it only works when it wants to.

      Thanks

Based on all the rumors I have seen in the past, how likely is it that the BHionic will appear that soon after the X2? Until some confirmation from Motorola or Verizon on the realesae dates come forth, I woudl be highly skeptical that the Bionic will release any time soon. We have been fooled too much by the teasers on Bionic and I for one am getting a bit tired by this chicaknery (sp?) being foisted upon the users — the people who pay for the phones and service — that if I had a reliable choice other than Verizon, I woudl show them my dissatisfaction of their approach to leading the users on.

I am in a rural area and probably won't have access to 4G for a couple of years. My HTC Incredible has been up for renewal for several months. I held off on the Thunderbolt because of the battery life issues and passed on the Incredible 2 because it is basically a Thunderbolt with a smaller screen and no 4G access. I will probably wait until both the X2 and the Bionic come out before deciding what to get, but unless the Bionic is significantly more expensive than the X2 or has significantly less battery life, I do not see any reason to get the X2.

just put the damn thing out already i am sick and tired of waiting!!!

  • Ryan

If Motorola doesn't put the droid bionic out by the end of this month I am going to stomp my feet and hold my breath till I pass out or worse I might kill someone, ok I wouldn't really kill someone but I am sick and tired of waiting already. Its almost June and my contract is up June 4th. I want to cancel cable and home internet. This phone does all I need if I could just get it in my hands. I really hate it when these damn companies do this!!! Ok I feel better now ;)

  • guest

Even if apple comes out with a new iPhone tomorrow, I'm not going to buy it, my next upgrade is going to be a Droid bionic, no questions ask!!!!!

  • Patrick

dude. whats going on? wheres the droid bionic?

  • Ainokea073

Is the bionic really scheduled to be released this month or during the sumner… I have a feeling that it won't release till November… the same time as the iPhone

  • JTC

I am seriously debating giving up waiting for the Bionic and getting the Charge. I am seriously frustrated at both Verizon and Moto. Additionally, there is a looming fear that the data rates will increase with the release of the Bionic.

  • Rob

Besides the bionic review that was made the other day (that was completely inaccurate) none of the bionics new specs have been rumored let along confirmed. So how can you base a comparison on a phone whose specs and design even has not been revealed. Write a blog on something else other than tech please. Thx

  • thumper1977red

What is the deal with people sayn they will cancel their cable and internet if and when they get the Bionic? Just curious cause I am due for a new phone and have a rooted incredible which I absolutely love and like the smaller screen that is on the since as opposed to the big gody 4 plus inch screens.

  • thumper1977red

Ok what is the deal with people getting the Bionic and canceling their internet and cable? I have a rooted incredible and love it and am due for an upgrade and want a phone that is worth the jump!

  • thumper1977red

What is the deal with being able to cancel cable and internet by getting the Bionic?

  • TBirdChick

I was going to wait for the Droid Bionic when it was rumored to be coming out in March. Then it was rumored to be end of April, early May. When Motorola came out with its statement talking about further delays I had had enough. I jumped ship. My plan was up in January and I was using a borrowed crap phone. I got the Thunderbolt. At first the battery had issues but I quickly found out it was because of the Blockbuster app constantly updating its movie list. Now my battery lasts two or more days with no charging and pretty average usage. I am very happy with my decision.

    • ctboyer

TBirdChick do you use the 4G LTE much when your battery lasts for this long? I want an LTE phone right now and was considering the Thunderbolt until I heard about the battery issues. Did this Blockbuster issue really truly solve all your battery issues? Please elaborate a little bit more.

Definitely the bionic……………. if it ever comes out.

  • Diana macias

Bionic only because of the front facing camera

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KIUMZMETYL4VOETJAF5C6CIIDM Michael Mcgrath

    Droid X2 all the way

Remember the droid bionic will have really low battery life since it is 4g and the Droid x2 will is 3g

Also the droid bionic will be priced in the range of 250 to 350 US dollars

  • http://twitter.com/conlonicus Matthew

AHHHHHH. This is the situation I’m in. I really dont need 4G but would like the FF camera. Also the BIONIC hardware looks slicker than the X2. HELP!

  • Concordantmind

I guess I’m insane but I would never invest in anything without 4g.  And the processor rocks.  BIONIC 100%.  My phone is dying but Im waiting.  Its supposedly coming out in two days but I cant find anything recent confirming it.
