PlayStation Network (PSN): Still No Online Status – Will you Forgive Sony?

By Posted 2 May 2011, 04:23

As most of you will be aware, the PlayStation Network is still down today, but gamers are probably feeling a bit more reassured after the company confirmed at an emergency press conference that the service will resume sometime this week.

The question we want to know though, is will you forgive Sony for what has happened? They have announced a compensation package for the downtime which will include a months trial of PlayStation Plus for every single PS3 user, some other free content which is region specific and also an extra 30 day subscription for those of you who are Qriocity members.

The offline time is now pushing close to two weeks, and some of you may feel that the compensation package isn’t enough, especially PlayStation Plus users. However, Sony has already said they are evaluating how to please PSN+ users, so don’t worry just yet.

How has the outage affected you? Do you forgive Sony for what has happened, or do you think it’s simply not good enough after being unable to play any online content, somes offline content too due to trophy syncing, for almost 2 weeks.

From our point of view, this is a pretty good deal for PS3 users. As we told you last week, Sony were under no obligations to offer PS3 users anything due to the outage as stated in their terms and conditions, so to get a free months trial of PlayStation Plus, you defintely can’t argue with that.

Give us your thoughts on this PS3 owners.

It is not Sony's fault they were hacked. That is like blaming a burglary victim for getting robbed on vacation, and not being able to tell the cops the whole scope of what happened until he got home. Or not immediately noticing well hidden items he'd forgotten about were stolen.

People need to stop hatng on Sony and start hating on M$. It is not wrong to sue Arch-Pirates who thinly disguise their easily moddable piracy hacks and call it "homebrew", nor is it wrong to take necessary steps to sue them in places that they can't buy the judge.

    • sonicworm

it is sonys fault there arrogance caused it and if you go away and get robbed because you left the door open then it is your fault also if you have 2 million cc details in your house at the time and one of them was mine then you better report it immeaditley

      • guest

leaving your door unlocked does not excuse the crime of burglary…you must be a burglar yourself…do you think it is alright to rape a little girl because she only has a dress and a pair of panties in between you and her vagina??? wtf, creep!

        • chris inamoto

Really! comparing Sony a huge multinational corporation being hacked and the rape of a little girl? really i mean really?…… Just how ignorant and naive are you?

        • guest

DUHHH, BLAMING THE VICTIM FOR THE CRIME? JUSTIFYING CRIMINALITY BECAUSE "IT WAS SO EASY"…..DUHHHHH, APPARENTLY SOPHISTICATED THINKING BEYOND YOUR ABILITY. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DO SOMETHING DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD…MOST OF US WHO WERE RAISED BY PARENTS WERE TAUGHT RIGHT FROM WRONG. NO MATTER WHAT.

        • Guest

People please….The only thing to really blame Sony about is the time it took them to notify user of the network intrusion and that precious information was stolen. At least that's the only reason I'm pissed at them. I mean 7 days later you notify me that my credit card info was very possibly stolen when you had an idea that it could of happened right when the network went down? That's just bad business in my opinion.

        • sonicworm

would your insureance company pay you if you got robbed while you went on holiday but the door was left open or would they pay if your car was stolan but you left the keys in the ignition no they would nt because you have to take all reasonable precaution to secure you property

    • guest

I cam be pissed they dont know about my credit card
just had two credit card purchases on my account the were not mine, im happy that amex was caught it and called me
they should have better protection if there protecting other peoples info

    • Harry

excuse me yes it is they have rubbish security no wonder they got hacked

    • Michael

James just the media overreacing. Its a free and good service! i totally agree with your way of putting it…….don't hate the victum

    • Concerned

No you are wrong that it isn't Sony's fault. People have been complaining about hackers for years now. Yes they were mostly kids hacking the games but now they have grown up and had the playground in which to learn how to hack.
So now it has come back to haunt Playstation. So yes I do blame Sony for this. I blame them for not cracking down on cheats and hacks for all these years that I have been a loyal customer. Only to be criticized for not being a bigger person for not ignoring the cheats and hacks in the games.

So now what does Sony offer me in return. A months free Playstation plus. What good is this to me after the month is over. I have paid good money for my Playstation's and their games. I have tolerated the cheats and hacks and now I get a promotional campaign for their new pay program as compensation.

This is so insulting it is almost intolerable to swallow.

      • Anarion Kayto

you idiot, hacks and cracks exits everywhere… banks, hotels, networks even microsoft gets them. Wherever there are systems the possibility of hacking will always exists, regardless of the security the system might had. to consider someone hacked PSN means these are groups of people with incredible knowledge in software programing don't be such a moron. These things happen, regardless of how well protected "your car" might be (for example) someone will the proper knowledge might be able to come, open the car, jump wire it and steal it under your nose or haven't you heard of grand theft auto? ppl need to stop being such haters these things happen and its sad it happened to playstation. Just be grateful they will give us freebies (which by terms and conditions of contracts, they're not entitled to)

      • Anarion Kayto

BTW i am seconding your statement, people are way of with this thing. As a wise man said once, "shit happens"

    • GET SOME BOY

first off no one said its there fault and if they want to not lose MILLIONS OF CUSTOMERS they will do something to make up for why they did not have a secure enough network in the first place and they should have people monatoring the screens for cases like this

    • travis d

its sonys fault because of there crap security! how isnt it there fault? lol

    • angry dolphin

But it is their fault that they don't protect good enough the stored credit card data! How about this?

    • Ally

It's nothing like blaming a burglary victim. 1 I didn't pay good money for a service from them for starters!

A company like Sony should have had proper barriers in place to prevent something like this happening.

UTTER DISGRACE for a company the size of Sony to be left in a mess like this with millions of customers out of pocket!

  • Leo Dukes

Forgive what? They didn't do anything wrong. Just like a homeowner didn't do anything wrong if his or her house was robbed!

    • Michael

How can you be sure that they didn't do anything wrong? Like a homeowner, Sony could just aswel forget to lock the door?

  • Himura Namikaze

yes first comment :D i think Atleast Sony are giving everyone a free month of PSN plus to get some free content and some cheap content and to already PS Plus member are getting something a little more i think Sony will be forgiven but it will be a while before we all forget Sony 2011 im sure some Uncharted 3 beta will make us all forget a little :)

  • raymond

i for give u hope u get it back on lol

  • Jason

I have nothing to forgive them for. The PSN downtime really has not affected my gaming habits one bit. I do not play multiplayer, unless the other person is in the same room. I tend to play a lot of Roleplaying games, which do not have a lot of online capabilities to begin with.

Sure I will take advantage of the free stuff when they become available, but I do not need nor will I accept an apology from them.

    • god

      go bak to D&D

  • Realist

Perhaps this will give the subscribers a chance to see what the real world is like and give them the opportunity to get out of their parents basement? =)

As long as Sony credits for time lost, I don't find it a big deal. I do play but have a real life too. This could be considered a blessing for some.

    • GET SOME BOY

SURE THAT IS WHAT THEY ALL SAY (BECOUSE YOU DO NOT LIVE IN YOUR PARENTS BASEMENT YOUR PLAY FROM YOUR GRANDMAS BASEMENT LOL!

  • Digi

Well, after that little scare some free DLC isn't really going to make up entirely for what has happened BUT—-It's not their fault either. Just now makes (me this is my personal opinion) MORE aware of the dangers of the internet and why PSN cards no matter how much expensive is x10 safer xD But, I've certainly lost my trust with Sony. Lets see what the future holds.

Now to all you fags going: "OH BUT XBOX IS BETTA" That is just plain retarded. I'll give you a point in to say that Microsoft could CERTAINLY 100% defend itself under such a malicious attack because A) They have more experience in that seeing as they have developed windows and the such B) Their service is P2P

Now with this is mind everyone has their preference just hate seeing people going around pointing the finger pointlessly! Lets see hope the authorities catch these punks and make them pay for what they have done!

    • Killmore

"…pointing the finger pointlessly!" hehe…Is that even possible?

    • Aaron

Just want to mention Microsoft could not 100% defend themselves against an attack. A prfessional trained hacker can hack into the pentagon. So no where on the internet is safe if your connected and you make enemies of the wrong person or group your not safe. Sony just happened to make an enemy of the wrong group of people.

    • Joe

I'm all about PS3 and and can't stand all those XboX using haters, but how about NOT using the word fags you fucking douchebag! Just saying.

  • LP81

I think it's ridiculous the number of people that expect a free handout because they were unable to play online VIDEO GAMES for a few weeks. The only people that should be considered to be compensated are Plus members, since that is a PAID service, in which the service was denied. Everyone else that is a free user has no claim to any compensation. No one is forcing you to sit at your PS3 and play a game. No one is forcing you to be online. Everyone nowadays expects a handout when they are inconvenienced for the smallest of things. What did you people do before PSN or XBOX Live existed? You probably sat on your computer and bitched about your lag and blamed your Service Provider not giving you enough bandwidth… No one is ever satisfied with what they have in life and are always looking for someone else to blame.

For the record I am a PSN, free user and I expect nothing but a "We're sorry that the service was unavailable"

    • digimichan

Thats very true! I agree. Me I was only worried when Sony said our personal info was compromised.

    • dsk

i disagree.. ive spent hundreds of my hard earned dollars to by a ps3 and online games and accessories for it instead of an xbox and am unable to play because of this.. yes, i agree its not sonys fault that they got hacked, but its not my fault either and im not able to enjoy the items ive payed for even though im a "free" user.. so your "plus" user argument holds no water since i PAYED for my items that are currently unusable!

      • dshiznit

what the hell are you talking about. you paid for the ps3 and games, you do not pay for the online. who says that not being able to play online means that your ps3 has no use?!?, you are a complete dumbass if that's what you think. suck it up cuz i have to deal with it too and i bought my own damn ps3 and games with my own damn money and i ain't bithing so you need to stop.

        • dsk

you are an idiot.. i wasnt bitching i was disagreeing with the orig post and explaining why

i dont know about you, but i dont preorder online games with friends just to sit and play offline.. theres a reason the multiplayer games sell so well you know!

"suck it up cuz i have to deal with it too and i bought my own damn ps3 and games with my own damn money and i ain't bithing so you need to stop. " <–really, what do you call that??

    • sgh

well.. we have paid for playstation 3 console for a reason, and for me it wasnt cheap, and thats why i have high expectation for the money i have put out.

    • Burn

yeha well for people who constantly use their credit card and have alot more money than a months membership on plus should get compensated retard ive put way too much money into this shit to have ppl onbtain my credit card # and whatever else. on the other hand i have gotten much accomplished in the last 2 weeks lmao

    • Dsmx_junkY

ha, wow! yea dumbass this is america of course we expect a handout. you would

      • damian king

well me personaly feel let down by sony, for a company the supose to be the biggest in the world i would of thought they would have had better protection and it took me 6 months to save up to get my ps3 and black ops as i`m disabled, i think they should compensate everyone who had paid for the extras as i paid for the service and its not availible, if its not back online by the weekend then i will be selling my black ops and ps3 and going back to the Xbox ( if i can afford another one lol )

    • Nick

hahahha… i like that u are soo true i dont need a handout at all… but if they are offering one… would it be bad to take it….lol.
i actually feel bad for them…. having to go through all of this.

  • digimichan

Well, after that little scare some free DLC isn't really going to make up entirely for what has happened BUT—-It's not their fault either. Just now makes (me this is my personal opinion) MORE aware of the dangers of the internet and why PSN cards no matter how much expensive is x10 safer xD But, I've certainly lost my trust with Sony. • Aaron

I bought a psp go on the 18th of April and have been able to put any games due the psn outage that happened and I have also bought a 50 dollar card to do that. And also waiting to get my 10 free games from the psp go promotion that is still running. Not good enough Sony because I have missed out on using my birthday present over my work holidays because of this big mess the network is in.

  • Anonymous

I don't feel like this will make up entirely for 2+ week outage. However, ps3 users don't pay for a lot of the features that a ps3 has, so we can't really complain. I DO feel that Sony needs to step up their game on the security so something like this doesn't happen again. They need to maintain their reputation. Some people even bought Xbox's because of it. (But not me, I think the PS3 is waaaay better and I will keep my loyalty). I'm just trying to patiently wait like everyone else. Hopefully by Wed lt will be up and running like they say. I just bought the new Mortal Kombat on the 19th of April and only got to play online for that one day, so I'm definitely wantin to kick some ass in that. Anyone feel free to add me when the PSN comes back online.

I just wish I could watch netflix without being logged into the network!

    • robert

you can just try to log in acouple of times and it will bypass network

    • Josh

You can i just did today! just everytime it says sign in sign in and it will say undergoing maintenance click back and you will have to do that about 2-3 times and you can watch whatever

    • Clo

You can watch netflix, i'm still able to watch mine

    • ReignOfTerror

you can! netflix still works!!!! duh… try it a couple times. it will work. netflix is internet based not psn based. I can still surf the net on mine and use netflix.

    • Snow Hare

Note also Justin, that you can also access Neflix via your laptop or desktop PC as long as you have installed the Silverlight plugin. It's true that you can keep trying and will eventually get through on the ps3 (whew) but don't forget that Netflix is a cross-platform service so there is more than one way to gain access to it. :-)

  • piper340

I just want to kill (in blacc ops)

    • Carl_doHrman

same here but think xbox always is impateint like look they see a new map pack coming out they're like "got to have it now!!!" and ps3 users are like "we can wait" same appliiesfor psn outage

  • bdm

I dont hate Sony, that would be really childish.

I am however dissapointed with the security measures, I work in the financial sector and online banking/ movement of funds etc etc has been around for quite a while now. It was something that i was involved in years ago. Back then security was still in it infancy and I would have thought that with all the advancements in online shopping and internet banking etc in the last few years security measures would have become far more sophisticated.

I understand that hackers and company online security measures are a ever changing game of cat and mouse, but the fact that Sony with years of experience and with many sophisticated models available for online security got caught out.

I wonder if this issue is far more prevelant in other companies then we think.

Cant wait to back to GT5 online :)

  • Kevin

Look with everythin that isgoing on and everyone saying that XBOX would be able to handle something like this is just bullshit in my opinion. I mean look at what is happining with XBOX right now at the same time but you dont hear about it because everyone is covering the PSN problem. before yall say XBOX is better then SONEY you my want to take a look at this. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/28/xbox_targ

    • TomBcfc

How is it lookin more favourable? Xbox has been down for 14 days before and them. The best gaming console is the ps3 just look at the games for each, i buy a games console to play games on.

      • Richard

They're both great gaming systems. The Live system was not down for 14 days; it suffered intermittant connection problems for 13 days over the 2007-2008 holiday season. This was because (as Microsoft admitted) the system could not handle the increase of traffic on the Live network following the sales of new console and games over the holidays.

    • Richard

Ummm… Kevin… that's a scam warning. Not anything at all comparable to a hack of the entire system. Scams are everywhere, including on PSN. I'm not saying Live is better but don't be a naive fanboy to the point of comparing scams to hacks.

  • Paul

xbox 360 is looking more favorable now.

    • keelzzz12

Yeah, but they still have hackers and XBOX 360 doesn't try to fix their firewall like PSN

  • Leigh

Lots of diffeent companies have been hacked and user details stolen such as Play and Barclaycard to name a few.

People are angry because the PSN is down and complain that they’ve spent lots of money on gear they can’t use – maybe what people should really be angry about – is the network was hacked because selfish people who wanted to loot and pillage the PSN – play pirated games and steal your -my – all 77 million users details as well.

We have no idea how the intrusion occurred – according to some security specialists all it takes is an e-mail that looks like it was sent in house – an employee opens it clicks the link and a worm opens and corrupts the system -is this what happened? We don’t know. Hopefully they catch the people responsible soon – before they sell our details – which by the way are worth more than any amount of money Sony has lost over this whole affair.

As for comparisons between xbox and ps3 – well Sony is a hardware company – Microsoft is a software company. Do you own a Microsoft television or Blu-Ray player – do you use a Sony browser or operating system on your pc – no (and before people point out the browser on the ps3 – well it’s actually a microsoft one). I have both systems – and these petty arguments for one over the other are pointless – the fact is the 360 could be viewed as last gen as they still use DVD’s for their games and refuses to upgrade as they would rather charge their customers for extra content that could have been included on the disc had it been blu-ray and the PS3 uses the now format of Blu-Ray – which explains a lot about the exclusives ps3 users get.

I’m for suing the hackers – after all what they stole from Sony – didn’t belong to Sony it belonged to us.

  • Kevin

It irritates me a little, but not at Playstation, more at the hackers that caused this. People can say that Sony should have been more on their game, etc. but what they need to realize is NOTHING is 100% secure. A determined and knowledgeable hacker can get into pretty much anything they want too.

I'm betting it was GeoHOT or a Friend/Fan of his. This is the world we live in, you can't blame the person who was victimized for the crime committed against them.

    • Richard

You're going to feel differently if your bank's security is hacked and you lose all of your money. It IS their responsibility. However, having said that, it seems likely that all anyone is going to lose is some online playing time. And, most PSN users don't pay for it anyway. The Plus users should get time added on and it appears that they will.

  • SmileB4DEATH

WTF! onlu plus members should get extras and free stuff, lol stfu! plus members aint nothing special you goon! all it is a few silly free stuff and games, nothing majour! we still payed for the fking ps3 so why make it sound like we dnt deserve fk all from all this! personly im happy with the online being bck on and thats all but dont be a greedy nob or begrudge others. NO i dont think we need free stuff but then again sony etc think we do so case dismissed! spent Hundreds on the ps3 so im sure a few STUPID FREE things wont kill,

    • anony

lol you should really learn how to spell, and be able to compile a sentance properly. that was pathetic

  • Nightmare

I think it will take more then a free month of something I never had a use for and free downloads that are probably nothing great to forgive the fact they didnt in the first place have proper security measures to protect our info and Credit Card info. If the hacker/s did take all our details and CC info they could easly sit back until a later date then clean us out. I expect sony to do better considering how bad it was.

    • The Real Woody

It's already been stated by Sony that our CC info was not taken… All that was fully encrypted. The only information they got was stuff you, or I, could look up online in a heartbeat. Stop bitching and whining and complaining over something you can't do anything about. The service will be back, hopefully better than ever, and then in 20 mins. after being online your brain will forget there wasn't even a service disruption to begin with.

      • fumobs

LOL. "After being online your brain will forget…" –awesome punchline…BECAUSE IT'S TRUE!

  • guest

"as stated in their terms and conditions, so to get a free months trial of PlayStation Plus, you defintely can’t argue with that."

    are you kidding me?

Im sure that my personal information is worth more than 30 day memberships and a few free songs.

  • adam

it's a da$% video game! i love it to but go out and get some sun and quit crying!

  • PrincessPeach

Yes, I forgive. Hackers suck donkey balls.

  • Anonymous/23

Now I love Ps3 its funn but people need to take into consideration that we own Sony not the employers or the Ceo. We literally own the world if more people educated themselves they would see this not to sound like a activist but when something you buy is not working properly even if for 2 days you should be able to voice it anyway you want. Not to whine about it but to give insight about it. Now for Sony to say we dont have to compensate you for anything they are correct but lets look at it from our point. If we say we want something because you fucked up Millions of CC info, im pretty sure you should be smart and give it too us. I dispise the fee on a Xbox but i dont hate the Xbox and the only reason Sony has a upper hand is due to this fee and Sony having certain exclusives. But with this new development and im pretty sure Psn will soon be a Pay-To-Play

  • Anonymous/23

service due to people never using CC on it again means Netflix will be useless, Qurocity will be useless, Hulu will be useless, and Sony will pitch a Deal on all of these on there own time so they do not lose sponsership frm these companys. But not only for there lose of sponsers but also the money they've lost due to these past few weeks and the money they are losing for people jumping ship to join Xbox. Now back to the main agenda when a company says to its people we dont have to give you anything but we are so shut up not only do i BELIEVE you do owe us something but i KNW you do. Sony without 77 millon people supporting it means no revenue for Ps3 and = Sony selling there 3d Tv's as a main revenue for a while. One thing I will love to say is hte minute PSN becames a Fee only service Xbox wins.

    • David

Anonymous…huh what a name lol when the hackers were the anonymous hackers.

  • Anonymous/23

Why because Sony has fucked us over, I am a PS+ user and discounts are nice but compared to its counter-part it has nothing to stand a leg on. When they do start charging us i gurantee the things people want but Sony wouldn't implement until you had to pay for it. Tell me why I or Any PS user should start paying 60$ for Cross Game Chat, Or Listening To Music While Playing My Game not saying Xbox is better No, No but i'd rather somebody who was upfront from day one have my money then come home to find Sony in bed with my GIRL because they played and danced around what we say and do wtf they want.

  • Anonymous/23

My main point is stop letting companies dick us and dictating to us what they say goes I hated the hackers but i understand a semi-portion of what they were trying to do with Linux and such they gave you freedom to what you wanted tho ryning to get rich themselves we just need sombody for the people to keep shit fare. And im not saying we shouldnt pay for anything but when we pay 60$ a game and YES companies work with the people who are playing there games.

  • Anonymous/2

If we are payin 60$ you should voice your opinion, htey should listen, and as a people we get what want. Before anyone says well its free or well we have to work for what we want and no responsiblity. Yes i work, yes am responsible if i with my plan make a successful gaming system and people spread word and it picks up i would do people right fuck tryning stuff my pockets for every little idea i have some stuff you just gotta be like that's fair and with businesses today and governments it will never happen thats why we have to start somewhere. "Sony were under no obligations to offer PS3 users anything due to the outage as stated in their terms and conditions, so to get a free months trial of PlayStation Plus, you defintely can’t argue with that." Yes you can argue you it and if you feel like it doesnt get heard have people join your cause if people disagree then there welcome to but dont let a company force anyhting on you or anybody.

  • laurie

I also dont feel Sony were responsible for this, the hackers are to blame!!, Its neither here or there for the free stuff I will be more than happy to see PSN up and running again

  • imasmoker

i'll forgive them right after i get my 30 kills

  • Jim

I'm told that I am very forgiving and that might be one reason I can't hold it against them. They are after all providing the online service free and a small slack in security is bound to be present. The truth is this could have happened to any company, no security is unbreakable. In this case, however, PSN happened to be a prime target.

  • tristan lindsey

no i dont forgive u bc it was suppose to be a secure network…now that its been breached u say one to two days before it gets fixed then it drags on to a further date which ya'll dont know the exact time and date.. i love playstation but after this it makes me think differently.. i used playstation ever since it came out with the first one.. it made me think about changing after this incident…. not sure if u can hold up to what ya'll promised! xbox has yet to have a problem like this.. its about supply and demand, making the customers happy or else the product wont sale if its not up to the standards on which was made to us people purchesing it..

  • sadlittleElf

i am outraged that Sony got thier socald Garunteed secure acount information hacked and that psn user's bank deatails wher stolen i have baught many things from psn over the time i have been with sony to sudenly find out that my bank information may now have been STOLEN from a third party i dont care abought free online content free psn+ ha no thanks i wont be bovering sony has lost my valued costom for thier lack of security id be more intrested in knowing if SONY will provide FREE protection to all psn users in futer if thier bank details get stolen and people start having mony taken from them for it will sony pay the damages this may cause ie fraud and theft ? sony say that the 3 didgit security code was not found well sorry sony also stated that thier system was SAFE and this happens free content dosenot make amends for the fact that 1000,s of psn users will be woried over bank acounts i myself have froze my cards and acount realted to psn or any sony products. and i will not be buying ANY products from psn online again.

i dont care as much abought online usage but it is nice to get some DLC's and ocasionaly play online with my freinds all i can say is SONY GET A BETTER SECURITY SYSTEM FOR THE USERS we trust YOU with our details and this hapens.

i may sound harsh but i have been a previus victim of online fraud and it basicly bankrupt me and nothing can be done abought it so to any others that have ever payd sony online i advise blocking that card and acount asap via your bank

  • josephts

I agree that it is not Sony's fault they got hacked. There are people out there who do this sort of thing for the sheer pleasure of doing harm to a big corporation.I am patiently waiting for PSN to come back on.

  • DavidB.

Thanks my son has be spending a lot more time on his books than he normally would. I hope it last till the end of the week

  • terminator

i think that instead of zombies , the next map should have hackers coming out of the windows , thank you psn for that great game and hope u fix the problem soon .

  • sac town legend

I think it is sonys fault ur a world wide company wit billions of dollars u should of had the security to not b hacked period. And there lil 30 day plus is not enough sum people have gone threw serious depperision from not having the ability to play online. Sum have even contemplated suicide how u feel about that.

  • SmileB4DEATH

    LOL HAHA good idea

  • Raven

I do think they were negligent to a large degree to store anyone's usernames passwords and address info on any one server without encryption is a VERRY rookie and stupid mistake. If they had anyone reviewing any basic security it would of been flagged. I am however glad they are taking steps to fix in future but worry about the potential for identity fraud world wide with this info being "sold/privately used".

I do agree they do not owe us anything for down time but for my info vein stored insecurely a months worth of service that is still "undergoing mantance…." is just a slap in the face

Hopefully people will learn not to use same password for everything.

  • Hayssam

i just want to kill and destroy tanks in battlefield please go ON ASAP.

A lot of people who complain more than often don't really think far, if at all. Nobody should have the right to ask for forgiveness in this specific situation. In fact, the only right here is SONY's right to refuse us. We are provided an entertainment service and if you:

    1. pay for it (bc you gave in to your desire–nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to buy a PS3 or sign up for the service)
    2. give your personal info (bc you gave it your trust, with or without thought of possible consequences–barely anybody reads the agreement prior to PSN sign up but, if anything, people only scan for keywords regarding payment for service)

…then you have no right to complain. You know the risks. In fact, I could care less about the free stuff they're going to hand out just to quell the whiners, but i'll take it anyway because…who doesn't like "free"?

Also…FYI…there is no impenetrable online service. No consumer should complain or deserve forgiveness unless you are purposefully screwed over (are banks a good example?).

  • A PS Owner 1991

Personally I'm disappointed in Sony's security measures involving credit card data and encryption procedures dealing with personal information, but in reality this information could have been stolen from a multitude of online service providers for many people. The truth of the matter is however, how this makes Sony look as a company that provides online media services and whether or not the customers will continue to purchase their products and services or switch to a rival provider.

Those who play online for free technically don't deserve anything, but what it takes to account for their continued patronage purchasing Sony related products. I feel the lack of online play for games specifically designed for multi-player play needs to be compensated for possibly with downloadable content to make up for lost time, but since this would hurt the developers of the content more so than Sony, Sony is attempting to make-up for this void with the free Ps+ for a month. Which i find relatively useless, but is the only thing i can justify as a probable means of compensation for those who play online for free. Anything involving some return in your wallet on Ps Store is completely impractical and would be taken advantage of by the many owners of multiple accounts.

I feel that Ps+ users deserve something quite a bit different, as half a month of their services were cancelled ,and as Ps+ member you should be compensated appropriately and an extra $5 or $10 in your Ps wallet or some form of rebate along with the free month of service for your inconvenience as a general Ps owner. Since you could just as easily purchase an Xbox and pay their monthly subscription and sell back your Ps3. With the only draw-backs being the few games that aren't cross platform.

Netflix and Qriocity users congratulations you have successfully been compensated accordingly with an extra 2 weeks for lost time zoning out watching some hilarious foreign fighting flick with English subtitles or voice overs, or by listening to free music.

Long story short I will continue to buy Sony media products and services as I refuse to pay for online services by monthly subscription, but there is a limit to how many times in a single year this is justifiable and my loss of leisure time how I want to spend it justifies the lack of payment to a major corporation and i may jump on that Microsoft wave. Basically, as long as this doesn't happen again in the near future I can say only for myself that Sony you are continuing to rob me of a percentage of my income with small purchases and new system releases. Those that deserve compensation have a justifiable reason to be angry and those that don't pay for anything, but product releases, be happy and for the love of your god or science, please, please stop spamming.

  • trent

i think this is pretty dumb, and i am not a playstation plus member, but even if i were, id want everyone else to have just the same amount of stuff that i would get if i had playstation plus. i think that Sony should rethink this through…

  • Gotgetter32

This is some bullshit and you got is a free 30 day trail hell its seems like its been that damn long anyway should make that 60 damn!! Foreal!!!

  • G.One88

This is for Lp81. You are such an idiot! You actually beleive that because you pay for plus member only you are entiled to compensation?!!! __ You pathetic clown you chose that service and you and sony profit from it in different ways ofcourse. We get it free because we chose that and this service was offered to us free with promises attached and ofcourse sony profit from us just as much as we profit from them. __ How we profit is we get to play online and have access to great stuff and sony profits financially from all of us people. we help promote the company and their products by using their services, buying games, and other products, our time, feedback etc gives sony popularity points which are needed to generate a heck of a lot of $$$ and to keep the company running therefore sony is making money from us not just you. __ Sony know that a lot of us will stick around even if we don't get compensated for the inconvenience and yet they are still going to compensate us so up yours we are entitled to compensation we are doing sony a great service. I love playstation!! Sony is great!!__No I don't blame Sony.__That is just typical from someone like you. You're stupid!!__

  • G.One88

LP81 You are stupid!! Just rediculously stupid! You need to stop sitting on your brain!

Waste of time to even try to school you in how businesses & companies work and stay afloat and espeacially how we are assets to these companies.

Simple to understand sentence jut for you…." You are stinky poo"!!!

For everyone else I don't blame Sony.
I Love Playstation and can't wait for network to get back up.

  • Gazza

YES we for give SONY we just wont everything back to normal thats all and theses idiot HACKERS to leave us and sony alone get a life

  • jeremiah jensen

  • Justin

  • xslayer

Yea its may 3rd and psn is still not back D:

  • annonymous

If no one else has noticed, Sony just announced that it got hacked again with the information being released on May 3, 2011, this time compromising another 25 million PSN accounts worldwide. Therefore it is my opinion that Sony's reputation has just been shattered like glass.

    • Gazza

thers no links or web pages saying this

  • baca la kaka

    Frakobe!!!! Bring back black ops!!!!

  • guest

i bet if they change something simple such as creating tha ability to listen to music while playing the ps3 like on the xbox this would contribute to making people happy!!!

  • kez

yes I forgive Sony, they done nothing wrong. How was they to know this would happen??? just goes to prove in this world you get people who think sitting on your arse playing video games is the best thing in the world stop bitching and get on with things that really matter such as kids, work and a real fooking life!!!

  • PLZ818

yeah give me back Other OS i actually used it!!!!

  • guest

anyone who thinks playing video games is a "sad life" is judgmental and that is the sad thing really.

  • Blackopsking

all these people saying sony did nothing wrong, need to have their brains checked out! Forget the house stuff nobody is there, but what about an apartment, and it gets broken into while your away or period, dont you think you should be able to blame the apartment manager. APT=Playstation Network, manager=Sony! But I will forgive them because just like an apt. they come and fix whats wrong!

  • Komodo Dragon

What are you Guys Talking about, Yeah i don't need compensation for not being able to play CoD online, its not Sony's fault that they where hacked, all true. However it is Sony's fault for not telling anyone that all that information was leaked and waiting a week to tell anyone about it. Yeah you better give me a lot of compensation if you want me stay with you or to stay with you for the next console wars! One free month of plus sounds good, but that breaks down to 5 bucks for losing someones information and it's something Sony should already have done for all customers in the first place to help sell it.
I personal think Sony needs to give some awesome free dlc away, something that people will actually play and doesn't look like it has another agenda for Sony or like 20 or so bucks credit to there psn wallet. It's gonna be hard for people to trust there info with Sony even if they do this but it should at least bring them back.

  • bartman152

sony didn't do anything wrong it those hackers just cause of spammers they try to get $5 i mean why can't you use a psn card they are more than five dollars

  • horris

    hurry up

  • RDavis

What about people who use Netflix through their PS3? For a multi billion dollar company it shouldn't take this long to get their stuff in order. Whatever compensation they offer will not please everybody. The article mentioned that they are not obligated to offer compensation. Well current PS3 customers are not obligated to purchase Sony products in the future. Sony has competition…competition that currently allows their customers to play games and watch content that they have already paid for.

  • brian

il tell ya what yall can go sell your ps3z if yall want to ima keep mine. youll find out when you get an x box what a load of crap you just bought.
but you know what ive learned from this outage tho? its that the psn and your regular browser on the ps3 are two totally separate networks that jump off of two servers. the fact that sonys servers are down and i can still go on any website and still download stuff from the browser shows the world that sony can see nothing you do on the browser only on the psn. what im saying is that even if you were banned from the psn you could still download from sites like ps3-themes.com or stagevu.com or access any info on the browser. the way the system is setup sony could never stop you from going on the network browser i didnt know that did yall?

  • brian

sony would have everybody back on board if they added cross game chat and the ability to play music during any game!!!!!!!!!!! period…

  • Mitchell

Sony did everything right. As soon as they spotted something threat ing to users they shut down all connections to keep us safe. I assume that kids are the ones that saying "Playstation sucks and their going to Xbox360". These kids don't understand the seriousness of identity theft and credit card theft. I am grateful that Sony is thinking of it's users safety before games. What they are offering for compensation is more than enough and it shows that they actually care about our safety. Glad Sony is doing all they can to make every user happy. Sony is far more than forgiven!!

  • brian

comon sony give us a date. stop beating around the bush or what ever your beating. better be a couple good games for free download too

  • David

I like Sony but after this im switching to xbox live they provide a safer service and my credit card was given to the "hackers" and PC could be a option. I told my self that if PSN isnt back online by friday night.(may 6th 2011) im switching…i cant trust sony they are going to loose alot of customers.

  • David

And the new free bees all PSN members are supposed to get i think if people have been threw all this trouble i think we should get two free downloads of any movie, shows, game, or music… and plus the free one month membership for Quiocity and Playstation plus

  • nick

Kinda sony's fault due to the fact it's imbarssing them for their company because they had a teenager hack into a billion dollar program. I have all out respect for Sony just think they need to either pay for online or get high high security and get a anti DDOS website as well. I know many friends that can do what Anonymous has dont to Sony. I do not. I told them i dont want to be apart of anything due to what they are doing. So Take Care Sony And Do You Know When It Might Be Back UP? email me at – Merch4them@gmail.com

Thanks and hope to see all online users very soon!

  • killabrew78

Online is free and you get what you pay for.

  • Numeric/360

bah thats nonsence xbox live was about to be hacked but they couldnt complete the hack.thats why xbox users have to pay painful memberships but the network is full time available,no hacks,no problems and no network shut down.so i just say that ps3 wanted to copy xbl but instead they got hacked.no one will ever make another xbl copy or imitation.plus that new things for the ps3 the controllers is just like the WII but for ps3.in other words ps3 tried to make an imitation of the famous consoles of the world.sony always wants to copy something but instead they got screwdup bby some borred gamers who hate the ps3 and that same typ eof players hate xbox or wii..is just like a network war between xbox 360 playstation 3 and wii users and gamers.u hack the ps3 i will fuck up the 360.thats the way to keep consoles of becoming better than the other consoles.so this means that sony donnt have the fault.the haters of sony and ps3 are the ones who carry the fault. i will not lie but i dont like the wii and the ps3.

  • bob

i want to see how many people are crying they cant play gay of duty cock ops lol.

  • chris

you guys owe it to us over the years to get this right soon with compinsation a billion dollar company cant protect there investments so sad i dont even play my game no more no excitment

  • Devil_Killer_831

Honestly I say no! I mean how long can it take to fix it? You guys keep saying that it will work a couple of days, this week, or next week but the truth is that it's gonna take mnths!!!

  • JugMan08

I don't blame them for the outage. It was the right thing to do. What I think we should not so easily forgive is the loss of our personal data. The credit card I had on file was charge illiegally. I can live without online gaming for a while. but my ID is not something I wish to share. All of you claiming its not their fault must not live in the world of IT. If my company was hacked, and customer data was lost it would be a law suite against my company due to the lack of appropriate security measures to avoid being hacked. The analogy of the homeowner is only correct if you beleive a homeowner who leaves the house unlocked is completely not at fault.

  • man

    where r u

  • trailape

how do you hate a company that provides a online service at no cost, and then the hackers are the enemy anyway. so now they reward everybody for the inconvenience with more free stuff, seriously how do you hate that…………………..

  • azteksoul2010

me and my kids we do love PS3 so i can stay sit and wait but, change my system for someone else nope.not even if i get for free ….. PS3 number 1world wide

  • DStorm

There is no reason to apologize you just do what needs to be done so PSN users can have online network again. Thanks for the gifts. You are forgiven

  • guest

yes it was haked, not Sony's fault. I would say the lack of info regarding when it will be back on is Sonys fault. I wan't to know whats going on but i might of been looking in the wrong places. I use the ps3 to go online gameing only what is the thing sony are giving us for a month free?_We sold the x-box in the house so have 2 ps3's wouldn't go with x box unless ps3 wasn't free then i might ?

  • Daniel Hart

I can forgive a slight delay for the downtime due to a hacking attempt, odviously these things happen nowadays, but with my information being taken and used to get into my other emails and used to pay for £100 worth of fifa players through my xbox accessed through this email account, causing all sorts of issues, bank frauds, loss of earnings and stress i now know two things; 1) i need to change my email client (who others in my situation will know exactly which one that is) and 2) Sony in my eyes should bare the blame. I am now not too impressed, i also take data security seriously and good points were raised when saying if another company lost confidential information of its users they could be sued and would bare the blame, to me same principle. Not only that but now we get free personal information data protection membership for a year, which we will then have to pay a subscription for, already sony are gearing up for charged membership or no safety guarentee, to me that sounds like sony cares…. about money… plus the package games being offered arent particularly the best and are probably more than likely again for Sony’s own ends, Infamous 2 anyone? Ideal time to allow people to play the first dont you think…. This is just my opinion, but probably have more than one person hating it who are too quick to forget Sony and its negligence to keeping its supposed valued customers up to date and childrenwho are happy ignoring other users with actual problems due to themselves not being affected unless we mean not being able to play online for a couple of weeks….
