By Posted 14 Apr 2011, 12:26

Earlier today we posted an article informing you that Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread was now available for the Motorola Droid X over-the-air, if for some reason you cannot receive the update we have all the links and info for you to download and install it manually.

As with any update we suggest that you backup all important data beforehand just in case something untoward happens, once you have done this you can download the update here and see full installation instructions on IntoMobile.

If all goes to plan you should soon be running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, this should bring lots of bug fixes, UI refinements, improved power management and much more. Lots of the changes are “under the hood”, if you are a developer and want to use the Android 2.3.3 SDK you can find out all you need to know here.

Once you have installed Android 2.3.3 on your Droid X we would love you to try it out and come back here to tell us if you are enjoying the changes the update brings, obviously if you are experiencing problems let us know and we will do our best to help you out.

Did the installation go smoothly for you?

I downloaded it yesterday, and like with anytime I update the OS I do a clean install by removing and resetting everything. The install went fine, but when I went to setup my exchange email it no longer supported it and I kept getting the provisioning error. Hope this is not going to effect too many people. Maybe it is a "special" way they have setup the email here at work, who knows..

Where is the app launcher that used to be at the bottom

The only issue I had a couple days ago was difficulty with unsuccessful Market downloads and the sync icon wouldn't go away no matter WHAT I did as a fix. It's gone now after like two recovery resets. I had to use my desktop to trigger Market downloads. Then they were successful. The Market is downloading successfully now.

My phone bricked for 2 hours. Then after I called Verizon to get a replacement it started to work. But I am still getting a new phone. The leaked version is nice but still leggy. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS. WAIT FOR THE OFFICIAL!!!!!

After playing around with my droid x for quite a few hours after manually installing the [official?] update from this site I am happy to note that is striking! Blazingly fast as opposed to 2.2 Froyo which, for one reason or another, was quite buggy on my device. And that update was the official OTA installation the folks at HHGREGG made sure was issued before I was to take my device from the store. The UI looks alot better with the blues, though I am a little unsure of the reason behind the white underlining at the bottom of the home screens. Also to note, on my device at least, is that the WiFi bug is no longer present. I know that alot of people have complained about it, along with the lack of "Smileys" in text entrys. These seem to have been fixed and I am quite happy with it. A win for all droid x users! A most recommended update for those who have yet to apply it. Great work from the devs!

The one thing that you have to make sure is to name it "update" not "update.zip"

I'm really happy with this update! I recommend it!

I manually installed the file(not avail to download for me yet) and followed these steps :http://www.intomobile.com/2011/04/13/verizon-droid-x-gets-official-android-233-gingerbread-ota/

    I noticed many improvements:
    1) Speed of apps loading 50%. Quicker responsiveness of the phone overall.
    2) New features including 3 profiles: home, work and weekend really cool
    3) Battery life is much better
    4) New look and feel
    5) New pandora quick load. You don't have to wait for pandora to load then select your stations. You just click the new pandora icon select the station you want, then it loads.

    Cons:
    1) I noticed 2 shortcut icons keeps disappearing from my screen and I have to keep reloading them: "live holdem" and"real blackjack" weird.

Overall I love this new upgrade. It seems like this was the version the phone should have shipped with.

I too got a "provisioning error " after the update.. I depend on my corp sync so this is a deal breaker for me

I was able to update my wifes and my Droid Xs with no problems.  I loved that it fixed the Wi-Fi bug.
However, why did Verizon send out an update (2.3.3) with a known MAJOR bug in it?  A bug that has been known about since January?  Android 2.3.3 broke streaming with AAC and AAC+ – so half my audio streaming apps no longer work.

This issue was fixed in 2.3.4 several months ago, but Verizon chooses to send out the broken upgrade?

Androind 2.3 for the Droid X broke my Corporate Email ActiveSync.  I received a provisioning error and the message said to contact server admin, which I did….my IT folks told me there have been numerous reports of Android 2.3 breaking our cuurent Exchange setup.  This is an open bug ticket with Google and they are currently working a fix/workaround.  Other than that the upgrade worked minus having to remove the battery 3 times because after the upgrade the phone froze and wouldn’t do anything.  Not so sure the millisecond faster speeds are worth the upgrade.  The UI changed and using the standard color scheme makes it hard to read.

I want to get rid of the dock at the bottom of the screen.  How do I do that?

It has been a VERY frustrating week for me.  I was using the corporate sync to access my work email, etc.  Ever since the 2.3.3, my phone froze – taking batter wasn’t working so Verizon had to send me a refurbished one. Then i was told i had to get the corporate data plan paying more while getting less Gigabytes.  Was on the unlimited one before.  Now it’s still not able to provision.  I am told i can’t go back to the 2.2. Wish this was tested and cleared of all bugs before it was forced onto my phone!!!!!!!  Finally had to call motorola to see how to fix the provisioning issue and they sent instructions for our IT guy but i am not sure if my company will allow the fix.  At this point, i ma stuck with no options!

I am working on my third driod x phone in a month since they went to the 2.3.3 gingerbread os this phone is only good for a paper weight the phone signal is crap the 3 g signal is crap doesn’t want to stream music anymore please bring back the 2.2 froyo os didn’t have any problems with it. So Verizon’s solution is to send me a driod x2 to see how it works out. I got my fingers crossed if it doesn’t work they will lose a ten year customer.
