LizaMoon Infection Installs Windows Stability Center, Beware

By Jamie Pert - Apr 7, 2011

A recent article posted on BBC News talks about how lots of sites recently became infected by the LizaMoon infection, we are hearing that the clean-up process has begun, now we have learned how this led to people becoming infected by scareware software.

We have embedded a video at the end of this post (put together by Websense Security Labs), it shows how within a few minutes the LizaMoon infection can easily infect an unprotected PC, if you have antivirus software installed you should be fine, however without it you will soon find yourself infected by rogue software called Windows Stability Center.

Apparently the LizaMoon website attack was first detected on March 29, at first only 28,000 websites were infected, however soon the attack infected hundreds and thousands of websites. The good news is that only a relatively small minority of people became infected by the Windows Stability Center malware, did you?

The LizaMoon attack has highlighted the poor security which many well-known organisations and brands use on their websites, that said most of the websites were small to mid-tier sites. Perhaps the attack will actually be a blessing in disguise, it could result in sites being more secure in the future to avoid similar attacks.

We are unsure how many people have been infected by the Windows Stability Center scareware, if you have been let us know in the comments section below and we will put together a removal guide.
