With all the tech knowledge that we provide our readers with, it’s always nice to hear about the odd gadget or robot that appears on the scene to get the imagination running wild. Today we bring you news of the iMobot.

Although this slender modular robot may look like a caterpillar, we can assure you it’s no stupid insect. The intelligent chain looking mechanical device is made up of several modules that look like links, which have joints that rotate 180 degrees.

This gives the robot four different types of freedom so it can stack itself, roll over, stand up and even crawl along like a bug. The company is looking at making the robot commercial and is even considering using them for rescue and search purposes as they are able to have cameras attached to them.

Its creators Harry Cheng and Graham Ryland have been given a $150,000 grant to launch their company called Barobo Inc. which will springboard their patent application and the commercializing ambitions.
