iPhone 5 vs. HTC Thunderbolt: Is LTE The Dealbreaker?

By Posted 16 Mar 2011, 09:59

It is certainly a good time if you’re a Verizon subscriber or you’re planning to move to Big Red at some point this year. As most of you will be aware, the HTC Thunderbolt finally gets it’s release tomorrow, March 17, and it’s a device which is carrying quite a lot on it’s shoulders.

If you have been keeping up to date with Verizon’s 4G LTE network rollouts, you’ll know that the HTC Thunderbolt is the first device which can offer speeds of up to 5-12Mbps downstream, and 2-5Mbps upstream – but is LTE the sole reason you are buying this device?

In terms of hardware specs, the HTC Thunderbolt isn’t actually that great at all, when you see some of the other phones that have been announced recently. Firstly, it doesn’t have a dual-core processor, just a 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM8655 chip with 768MB of RAM. Another big disappointment about the phone is that it only ships with Android 2.2 Froyo, not the current 2.3 Gingerbread software which should really be on all new Android smartphones now.

With this in mind, we want to know if LTE is the only reason you are buying the HTC Thunderbolt. Don’t forget that the iPhone 5, if it’s announced this Summer is highly unlikely to have 4G LTE support as well, which could turn potential iPhone 5 buyers to the Thunderbolt – purely because of LTE. The iPhone 5 will probably have that same dual-core A5 processor that’s featured on the iPad 2, but how good will the device actually turn out in 2011, if it can only run on Verizon’s 3G network?

Perhaps something worth thinking about if you’re planning on picking up either handset. Give us your thoughts on this one.

Yes, LTE is the reason…no faith in Apple even bringing the Iphone 5 to verizon to begin with …the iphone 4 was only released a little over a month ago. How would those costumers feel?
