Angry Birds gets $42 million to expand

The phenomenon that is Angry Birds continues to grow, recently we had the news the hugely popular game was coming to Facebook. Now it has raised $42 million from investors to further expand into mobile and social networking markets.

An article over at MSNBC is reporting that Skype co-founder Niklas Zennstroem, who is now on the board of Rovio, said “This investment will give Rovio wings”. He added that the game is one of the fastest growing products he as seen. The game is currently played by around 40 million users across the world.

Chief executive and co-founder Mikael Hed told Reuters last August that he wants to turn Angry Birds into an entertainment brand, much like Walt Disney’s Pixar has achieved with its range of characters. So far the game has been downloaded over 75 million times in both paid and ad-supported versions.

We have recently seen Angry Birds Seasons which had different versions for special holidays like Christmas and Halloween, and a special St. Patrick’s Day edition is coming next.
