In perhaps the biggest surprise of the morning / evening depending on where you tuned into Apple’s iPad 2 event, Steve Jobs announced an innovative new case for the iPad and iPad 2, which the company are calling ‘Smart Covers’.
In what can only be described as a simple ‘flap’ mechanism, Apple’s Smart Covers are built using polyurethane and leather material, and iPad owners will have the choice of which material they prefer. Both materials will come with an included microfiber attached so it will automatically clean your iPad’s screen whilst being enclosed in the Smart Cover.
How is it attached to the case you ask? With a series of clever magnets according to Apple, as these magnets will also help to auto-allign the smart cover, but at the same time minimizing the overall weight and thickeness of the device.
Here is the beauty of these Smart Covers: once you open them, they will automatically wake your iPad up from a sleep state, and once you close it, it will automatically resume sleeping – no buttons needed at all. Apple has also pointed out that these Smart Covers are very easy to detach and swap out for a fresh color if needed.
Speaking of colors, there will be 10 to choose from in total. Five of these will be built using polyurethane, and the other five made from leather, you can see a picture of the types of colors available below, courtesy of Engadget.
If you’re excited about the prospect of owning one of these cases, you’ll want to know much they cost. The polyurethane will be priced at $39 US and the leather ones will be the premium option priced at $69. You may think this is slightly on the expensive side, but they do look very impressive we admit.
Will you be buying a Smart Cover for your iPad 2 upon launch? They will be shipping soon according to Apple.
