HTC Thunderbolt Reminisce: Release Date, Exploits, Specs and Skype

Even though the upcoming HTC Thunderbolt appears to have been a popular topic of conversation over the past week or so, we’re still none the wiser as to the handset’s official release date. In fact, there appears to be a bit of confusion as to whether or not it’s been delayed.

No one really knew how much the HTC Thunderbolt was going to cost up until a week or so ago, when Best Buy unveiled the handset’s price. As Chris Maugham previously noted here, Best Buy announced they would be selling the device for $249 with a 2-year Verizon Wireless contract.

However, Peter Chubb then noted that although the actual price of the HTC Thunderbolt handset was revealed, the 4G rate wasn’t. This lack of information led to some concern over the matter, and some even suggested they would possibly wait for the HTC incredible to launch.

Russell Holly over on the geek.com website appears to think that the closer we get to the HTC Thunderbolt’s release, the further away we are from getting the device that we were originally promised. One of the reasons for this is the recent news that the Skype video feature has now been removed.

The handset may not have been released yet, but that doesn’t appear to have stopped a few more HTC Thunderbolt cases arriving at Verizon stores. As Kevin Krause at phandroid.com reports, this includes a high gloss silicone cover, a combination of a hard case / gel cover and a snap-on hard cover.

Those of you that are still interested in purchasing the HTC Thunderbolt may be interested in a recent article over at forum.xda-developers.com, which shows the handset being rooted using known exploits.

Do you have copy editors? Your article was atrocious.

    • Snobby

      atrocious…lol, what a snob

  • dylan

that guy who made the post of skype video being removed has no proof whatsoever that it will.

If in fact Skype has been removed from a 4g capable phone with a front camera for that same purpose, I will not be buyng this phone. It's just a bad marketing from VZ and I will wait on ATT a little longer to se what's coming next.Just stupid people making stupid decisions based on S… U get the point.

    • Thunderbolt

There is an audio / video sync issue, so if the Thunderbolt does not release with Skype, it will be released in a software update soon after.

  • Colin

No skype no customers. Nuff said

  • Bill

It appears V is having more software problems for their 4G Phone network than the thought, therefore the continued silence. If in fact skype won't be available on the TB, that probably resolves one software issue. Skype will probably run better this summer on the Motorola dual processor. With the dual processor Moto. Atrix coming out Tuesday, that gives an opportunity to see if that is a better choice than the TB. ATT is probably cutting deals on the Atrix to get V customers.

Its stupid that skype is being taking off a lot of pdoe perfer to video chat with loved ones when not there with them please fix that

  • Anthony

The 4G rate, as told to me by a Best Buy rep when I preordered the Thunderbolt is $45/month for unlimited 4G. That is $30 (for at least 3G) + $15 if you want access to 4G.

  • Paul

Tomorrow's Best Buy ad has the Thunderbolt @ 249. No word in the ad about reserving it – just a normal "New" ad.

  • Jim

charging extra for 4g is just stupid. its just a new stanard and nobody should pay extra for it.

  • joe

Not to sound mean but all this crap that you have been hearing are rumors don't listen to anyone unless there from Verizon corporate

  • verizon employee

skype will be 100% available on the thunderbolt. may not be ready by launch date but any android user knows the application is still in development. in the mean time their is many more video chat apps on the market so don’t be worried! this phone WILL live up to the hype plus some. guaranteed.

  • Jon

    I agree, can't wait

Verizon bungled the iPhone release, and now they're doing the same with the Thunderbolt. I was psyched about this phone, but a month's worth of incompetence has me doubting whether I want to spend two years with this company.

  • eestubbs

We all of the Verizon's delays with this phone and no mentioning of the Verizon Bionic, I am beginning to wonder if all the talk about how good Verizon's service is, is going to their head and they figure no matter what they do or how long the make us wait, we will still wait and buy.. Hello AT&T Inspire or how about the ATRIX. AT&T's service is good in my area even thought I have always been a Verizon customer, but after Feb. 24th or is it Feb 28th, I don't know.

  • Chaztera

Yeah, Ditto w/ eestubs, we've been a waitin' & a waitin' How come the ATRIX is being released today? seems like a much more complex phone etc.

I'm getting Impatient… after the the 28th I amy change my mind too
