For those who may not know, PPLive is one of China’s most popular and most influential online TV sites. It offers viewers live steaming as well as a range of Internet video services including VOD (video on demand). First founded in 2005, the company now has a 200 million user base, 105 million of which use the site monthly.
Its viewers spend an average of 2.45 hours a day watching online, making it China’s most engaged site. To find out more about PPLive visit their site here.
The company currently is limited to running its TV business on PC but is expanding and will soon be available to all types of devices. A recent investment into the company from SoftBank, will no doubt offer a great boost toward this expansion. They have taken a stake of 35% from PPLive, offering them $250 million and PPTV.
To get a rough scale of this amount of money, China’s answer to YouTube; Youku and also PPLive’s closest rival, raised $203 million in its IPO. You can read a more information about SoftBank’s deal in an article from TechCrunch.
