Motorola Android Tablet: Xoom Release Date Narrowed Down

We first brought you news about the Motorola Xoom – the much-hyped tablet PC that will run on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system – back in December last year, although we didn’t actually know the official name back then.

However, as previously mentioned by Peter Chubb, Motorola revealed both the tablet and its official name during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. As mentioned over on the Motorola.com website, the Xoom is the first tablet PC to feature a dual-core processor.

The Motorola Xoom also comes with 1GB of internal memory, support for Adobe Flash Player, a 10.1-inch widescreen display, front and rear (5-megapixel) facing cameras, a HD camcorder, a front facing webcam and video playback in 720p HD.

Although we still don’t seem to know a specific release date for the Motorola Xoom, we do know that it’s been narrowed down to a specific month. According to Alex Wagner over at phonedog.com, a Wi-Fi only version of the Motorola Xoom is due for release sometime in April 2011.

This news has also been confirmed over on the mibz.com website. However, it also mentions the Verizon Motorola Xoom launch date, which appears to be sometime in May. What do you think of the new tablet PC, and will you be purchasing one?

Yeah, I've been waiting for a decent tablet to use around campus. iPad's lack of flash support is a deal breaker for me. I didn't like the interface on the tab, and it's screen is too small.

umm… i think it should be pointed out that motorola has said that the verizon release date is no later than march 2011… so idk where u people are getting april and may from!

Who writes these things??? Like Trevor said, at CES they said first Quarter!!! First quarter has NOTHING to do with APRIL or MAY…

  • Magicdroid

I sure hope it's last week of Feb, beginning of March.. otherwise I'll return empty handed from the States =/

been reading February everywhere else except for here. so i think you are safe to ssume february as long as google doesn't mess with them concerning Honeycomb.

I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good. I don’t know who you are but definitely you’re going to a famous blogger if you aren’t already ;) Cheers!

Good to see your mom stopped in to comment. As previously stated, quarter 1 is before April.

I have one main concern that keeps bugging me and was wondering if anyone knows better.

Of all the pictures and demo videos i’ve seen, the XOOM is always portrayed in landscape. Has anyone seen it in portrait mode or if at all it can turn around like the IPAD? I know its only a slight drawback if it doesnt but i would like to prepare myself for any disappointments :)

I've read several report where people had "hands-on" use of the Xoom. All reports stated that it can rotate between the two. There was some notable lag between switching but it was possible.

The 4G – LTE version is due out in April. 3G and wifi are likely February and March respectively. This is from Verizon’s press releases. This isn’t a secret.
